Username: Naroc
Banned Roles: Engineering
Ban reason: Participated in a revolution with engineering resulting in damaged substations, attempts to flood the area with carbon dioxide, and a degradation of station behavior
Length of ban: Indefinite
Ban Issue:
I did what I was banned for, but the ban is unreasonably harsh
Events leading to the ban
This ban happened a while ago - since then i’ve been out touching grass and taking a break from SS14. I cant find the replay of this game for some reason, so to the best of my recollection the majority of the shift was an uneventful one. I spawned in as usual as an Atmos tech and began to setup the TEG for long term power and so we could turn the singlu off. I believe the station map had just been updated and so it was my first time playing around with the new TEG setup. I spent at least the first 40 minutes of the shift tinkering with the TEG, not wanting to use a GARTEG setup and actually build something from scratch, as the station seemed to be doing fine. I managed to get something working that was really plasma efficient and organized shutting of the Singlu and switching power to the TEG. The CE impressed with my work even gave me the engineering medal.
Then the trouble began. Zam Ashee a fellow engineer had made the call over engineering coms that he had been locked up by security and would like us to break him out. I was quite familiar with Zam, he was a regular on Salamander and understood this to be his sense of humor. Wanting to see what all the fuss was about I headed down to security to check in on Zam. Outside security I protested at the arrest of Zam, over time more and more engineers joined the protest outside security. This sort of snow balled into a full blown protest outside of security at the arrest of now two of the engineers - one had been arrested for actually attempting a breakout by this point. As this was a peaceful protest by this point with the demands of the engineering crew being only to speak to the captain about the arrest - I felt like this was all in the RP spirt and not self-antag style behavior.
The protest escalated into sabotage when another engineer shut off power to the security substation - I was not involved in this plot and had spent the entire of the protest outside sec talking with the officers. The consensus among the engineering team was that we would not fix the damaged substation until security issued an apology. After the power was eventually fixed the engineering team moved from outside of security to the engineering breakroom to co-ordinate further protest actions. Suggestions were made to wall of sec or to build lots of firelocks and trigger them somehow, so they would each be have to crowbarred open one by one. The team settled on firelocks and I got asked to drag the CO2 can to set of the firelock we were to build outside sec.
In my mind this was starting to escalate fast, but I was caught up in the moment and was not thinking of the wider repercussions. Furthermore i was under the wrong impression that only a small amount of CO2 was needed to trigger the firelocks and so this wouldn’t be harmful to anyone. An admin by this point had heard of our protest and intervened before any plan could be enacted.
I cant remember what I said exactly at the time in the A-help discussion, but I didn’t lie to the admin and was honest about my intentions. In my mind as I had not intended to hurt anyone, this wasn’t self-antaging. I wasn’t aware at the time that protests and general unruly behavior by departments was a form of revolution and banned. In hindsight this makes total sense and although I didn’t sabotage the station I can see now I was engaged in a revolution. My justification at the time was because I didn’t plan to hurt anyone or to kill the heads of departments this wasn’t a revolution or self-antagging.
Reason the ban should be removed
A permanent role ban feels a little harsh. This was my first offence, I didn’t directly or indirectly hurt any other player or damage the station and was stopped before the CO2 could be used to trigger the firelocks. Apart from arguing with security I never impacted anyone else’s round.
I’ve greatly enjoyed my time on Salamander and teaching engineering as CE or Atmos has been some of the most fun I have had. I probably played a little to much, and I definitely should have known better than to engage in a revolution. I’m sorry for my behavior and I would like to be able to contribute again as CE to the community.
Reflecting on the incident now - I was in the wrong, but I feel like a permanent ban is quite harsh. I would like to be able to play those roles again, and I am certain that I better understand the rules now.
Again I’m sorry for my behavior and would also like to thank any poor reviewer for reading this wall of badly written text.
