I havent seen anyone talk about wew lad, so I thought I should open up a discussion on it.
For anyone who is unfamilliar, wew lad is what the syndicate agent code spells.
So it turns out wew lad is a 2013/2014 4chan meme that most likely roots back to the murder/manslaughter of a 13yr old filipino lad who replied “wew” to a threat from their would be murderer on facebook.
4chan took this niche reference meme, and grew it until it possibly lost its original meaning.
Its hard to say whether the original context of the meme was still there to those using it by the time it became popular, but its difficult to imagine why the meme would be funny to people without it being an edgy reference to a child murder.
Here are the comments under the 2012 article: Teenage Boy Killed for 'Wew' Facebook Comment - SecurityMatters Magazine
Now while I dont personally feel offended by hearing wew lad, it does feel like an icky and outdated thing to keep around since ss14 has attempted to shed the many unsavoury aspects and references of ss13.
Most of us are probably familiar hearing wew lad, but have no idea what its referencing, so it might as well spell anything memorable instead.
I for one dont really have any attachment to the reference made here, and to see a new syndicate code with an actually good reference in its place would be nice.
I guess if people are really super attached to it, it might be worth keeping, but otherwise it should probably be axed.

Can we get a citation on this? Because personally I don’t buy/believe this at all.
The page you linked all the comments are from 2014, well after the meme caught on. So this is like projecting a modern meme onto a past article.
The KnowYourMeme page technically does recognize this as occurring before the meme caught on, but “wew” is a pretty common phrase. He didn’t even say “wew lad”, just “wew”?
I doubt these two events are related unless someone can pull up relevant 4chan pages or other references that links them in an appropriate time frame.
Seems like this is just some random wiki guy’s guess more than anything.
In case it’s not clear, here’s the timeline I’m seeing:
In 2012 a teenager in the Philippines said “wew” to a tough guy online and was murdered after.
In 2013 “wew lad” becomes a forced meme on /s4s/ 4chan.
In 2014 a few edgy 4chan discovers the 2012 event and force the 2013 meme onto the 2012 article.
(Presumably) Post 2014 KnowYourMeme establishes an extremely tenuous relationship between the 2012 and 2013 event.
(Note: The KnowYourMeme page doesn’t even establish -how- they’re related. It is a non sequitur between the two sentences. The author is putting 0 effort into explaining the relationship, probably because they don’t actually know -if- there is an actual relationship.)
Maybe i am missing something. But what does this have to do with the game? Like at all?
Is this implying that the “weh” is directly tied to that? Because i’d need a separate source for that correlation.
Also, yes. Nearly EVERYTHING in modern times, if traced back enough, involved suffering of some kind. Nothing is original, everything is based on something else, and more often than not that includes bad things.
Nearly every country’s flag has blood in it, most big companies have done terrible things in their past, and many symbols that we appreciate today have been used under unspeakable acts.
I’d at least move this thread to off-topic if anything.
I never knew the context and frankly, I had a happier day not knowing it. But it is a neat way of saying “syndicate shenanigans”.
I think the important thing to remember is that it had grown to lose its original meaning by the time of… well, now, and that opening up this can of worms could lead to people perverting it back to its original meaning solely to ruin the game experience and something that for many is just a funny internet slang word.
(Not trying to saying “meme on this kid” or anything disrespectful, but I just though it was funny internet slang when I heard it myself. Kinda feel like I’m finding it hard to express that without sounding like a dick though.)
Why do you even feel the need to open up a discussion about it? From what i see it is +10 year thing, averagge people nowadays don’t even recognize games made before 2010-2015, let alone a highly specific incident from 2013 that only so much people heard of and only so much people even remember, or even use, i didn’t even understood what syndie sound cue said before the admin’s reply i thought it was just gibberish in poor radio transmission sound effect, the flesh guy says we should avoid making a light of suffering yet, quite objectively bringing it up on the forums brings much more light on it than to leave it alone, it is so old that probably more than %75 of the people who saw this thread didn’t knew about it before, but now they do because of you guys “trying to not bring a light to it”, please, i don’t want to be rude but frankly, it just feels like some of these “remove this its offensive” threads are for self satisfaction and aura farming, you could’ve notified staff about this without opening a public thread too if you so cared about not bringing a light to it, like, i don’t know how can i put it in a kinder way but thing you think you are doing and what you are actually doing contradicts themselves.
update: I still don’t understand what the sound cue is saying, like, there is no way someone who has never heard it before is gonna find out about it because of the sound cue
What you mean in modern times, Many nursery rythmes trace there origins back to terribly terrible things like ring a ring of roseys is a refrence to the Plauge aka blackdeath. but to talk about the topic at hand, I didn’t know the refrence either. bit tasteless, but does show that synicates are the bad guys.
