I’m not gonna be a hardass about this, but I’d like to point out that an item called “Templar Helmet” with a description of “DEUS VULT” can have a bad association to some people due to the relatively frequent use of templar/crusader imagery by various groups from asshats to terrorists.
A medieval helmet is cool and all, but I would say it might be better if it wasn’t flavoured with crusade references specifically.
Just make a PR it’s literally a text-edit which you can do fully online on github.
Do not actually encourage GitHub web editing. It’s bad practice and we recommend against it for a reason.
This is a joke right? This is the literal definition of throwing the baby out with the bathwater. To get offended over a silly helmet in a silly space game is incredibly silly. You can’t just sanitize anything you don’t like & this is one such thing.
bruh
Ignoring the fact you don’t know what “throwing the baby out with the bathwater” means…
This is a completely reasonable request, and it is not appropriate to come in here saying things like “stop being offended so easily”.
Seconded. While I assume it was added in good faith, I’ve always found it mildly uncomfortable. I wouldn’t mind seeing the description changed to something more benign.
I would say that I personally wouldn’t want the helm entirely removed. I remember one of my first experiances had two sec off’s wearing the helmet going around talking like knights as they did sec things. though there is a connection to the crusades the knight archatype often uses this time of helm and is a common place thing in fantasy settings.
Maybe the name could be changed to paladin helm to more call to fantasy settings rather than the real world events with a fitting description like “Time to SMITE evil” to have it more D&D and fantasy linked.
I don’t think anybody is suggesting removing the helmet? Just change the description.
K.
Now I may be no expert, but.
If “templar imagery” is “cringe” why does the image (item) of the…templar helmet…still exist…?
Templar imagery is cringe BUT an image of templar regalia is a-okay, whilst an iconic, probably not as historical as we may think, phrase that people love to RP with, isn’t?
Because a good chunk of the time people are using “DEUS VULT” unironically, their “RP” is some form of bigotry.
Well then they can unironically get banned, like I did :3 but arguably with good reason
Taking the phrase out of the description will do nothing to half the usage of the phrase, the only thing that will halt bad actors is good actors within the community of whom report it
The only instance of RP mentioned in the entirety of this thread, was, in my opinion, good RP. The item still exists, that RP will continue unabated.
2025
I personally don’t see anything wrong or offensive with the description or the item. I think you can pick at just about anything and find someone using it with malice. Take ss14 for example, both ss and 14 (and 13 for that matter) are both associated with white supremacists, but given the context of the game, the abbreviation ss14 has been determined to be fine. I think Christian iconography might make some people uncomfortable, and if that’s the issue then the Chaplin’s bible may as well be reworked as well if that’s the decision from the dev team. but on the other hand, players of the Christian faith may find this change offensive as it would appear to be deliberately targeting what they believe to be their faith and heritage causing them to feel marginalized. I think that while this is a small change, the community will be polarized by it and by naming the PR “woke agenda” is politicizing a silly space game. I think part of the players will think that this is a ridiculous change meant to “wokeify” the game, bringing politics into it and the other part will feel that it’s a good change because it removes words with negative connotations and associations. I would love to see the communities’ thoughts in the poll below and remind everyone to stay respectful and tolerant of differing opinions and to engage in civil discourse.
- Remove helmet entirely
- Keep helmet entirely
- Change sprite, keep description
- Keep sprite, change description
- Change sprite, change description
- Some secret third thing
I disagree in two main points.
First off, this isn’t really about Christianity in itself. You could have a whole debate on any given religion’s symbols being used in the game, with arguments on both sides from people both inside and outside the faith. I’d say the Christian imagery should be one of many featured, but you could argue the game shouldn’t have explicit real religious symbols at all. Either way, that is nor what I’m arguing on here. The templars and their alleged battle cry are A) frequently co-opted by extremists and B) not actually all that important to the Christian faith or proud heritage to pretty much anyone who doesn’t in some degree find the killing of “infidels” appealing. This isn’t really just a benign Christian symbol used maliciously, it is quite directly a reference to a “Holy War” against what is, in “the West”, a minority group.
Second off, game’s woke, pal, has been since start. Like, if one js the kind of person to complain about “woke games” and “politics” (minorities existing), this isn’t really a project that would appeal to them.
Also, as a bit of comparative demonstration, if one referenced Jihad and “Allahu Akbar” in a similar tone, it would raise quite a few eyebrows. And both the terms of “Jihad” and “Allahu Akbar” have much more important and legitimate (ie. not literal warfare) uses in Islam than “Deus vult” has in Christianity.
Dude. Look at the icon FOR THIS VERY FORUM WEBSITE. You think we aren’t already political?
This is just a bad-faith argument.
The PR was merged by maintainer staff. Trying to make a vote on the forum isn’t going to make it reverted. This thread is done.
