Characters you play: Nicholas Jones
On average, how many hours do you expect to admin per week: At least 20-30
Days you are available to admin on: All days of the week.
How old are you? 18
Do you have any SS14 experience outside of Wizard’s Den servers, or any SS13 experience? I have experience on Delta-V, RMC14, Frontier Station, and also tried out SS13 on tgstation.
Do you have prior administration experience (SS13/SS14 experience preferred, please also post a way for us to verify this)? No SS14/13 experience, however I do have administration/moderation experience outside of Space Station, primarily being my being a Moderator on a minecraft server called DiamondFire. This can be verified through the following link: Staff members | DiamondFire
Have you ever been banned from any SS14 or SS13 servers? I have received a 7day security roleban from Delta-V for powergaming (I still do not agree with the reasoning for it, but that is not a discussion I am going to go into here.), no bans or rolebans other then that.
What are you primarily interested in doing as an admin? There is a massive difference between what I would personally LIKE to do (Frequent Events, etc.) and what I would actually do in order to keep the game healthy, namely rule enforcement, both in game and out of game, PERIOD events (the more often you do them the less fun it gets), helping out players with questions, etc.
What are you least interested in doing as an admin? I don’t think anybody would like dealing with shitters/raiders (though having those people not dealt with at all is far worse) and depending on the amount of it in SS14, the “paperwork” aspect (Logging actions, etc.) of moderation could also get annoying though if it is needed it is needed.
Detail Questions
What role do you think game admins serve on our servers?
The primary job of game admins is to keep the game fun and enjoyable for everybody involved. This can be done through a pretty expansive list of actions ranging from helping out players with questions, sometimes doing an event to spice up the game, dealing with players violating the rules which ruins the game for everybody else, etc.
Why do you want to become an administrator for SS14?
I play this game a lot, I have over 580 hours on wizden alone, and thats ignoring my time on other SS14 servers, which if you combine wizden plus all of the others adds up to over 1278 hours. (Delta-V: 371h, Frontier: 181h, RMC14: 146h) I primarily play on Salamander, where especially in my timezone (CET/CEST aka Lowpop), admin coverage is pretty limited, and there are not always admins available when needed. Combine that with my pretty extensive SS14 experience, the fact that I just generally like to help out with things I am passionate about, which SS14 falls under, and I feel like I would make a solid pick to become an administrator, and I know I would also enjoy it.
How do you feel about the current roleplay status on the servers?
First of all, I play Salamander (MRP) so as for my opinion on RP in LRP: No clue.
As for MRP, Its fine ish. While there are absolutely things I would like to see improve, for example space law and how easy it is to throw somebody into the perma brig, overall the server is in a solid state when it comes to roleplay in my opinion, keep in mind this is from my personal experiences in lowpop hours.
Other than banning problematic players, what admin actions do you believe have the biggest positive impact?
Using the AHelp relay. It is such a powerful tool with many ways it can help out drastically: Contacting players breaking a rule who might not be aware of that and informing them of that & asking them to stop, which can often solve an issue without needing to take moderation actions beyond maybe just a note if they aren’t a repeat offender. It can also be used to answer questions from people who do not understand something, handle player reports regarding other players breaking the rules, etc.
Have you ever had a negative experience in the game or with a game admin? If so what, if anything, would you do to prevent other players from experiencing this?
On wizden? Not really no, most of the people here are nice and passionate about the game, so no real bad experiences. Though in order to keep it that way I would, as described above, make sure to communicate with people where needed. Just like how sec should talk before stunning and cuffing where possible, a chat can go a long way for admin issues.
Have you ever had a good experience with the game or a game admin? If so, what was it?
Its hard to single out specific experiences, but as I mentioned, the SS14 admins are nice, helpful, passionate, etc. So just the general interactions with staff in the game are positive, wether that be having them help out with rulebreakers or answer questions, or relentlessly hunting them down as a ghost in order to O R B I T (Yes I know I will have to live with this too if this app get accepted)
Scenario Questions
Scenario 1
It is the start of the round. There are 60 players on the server. The game mode is traitors, traitors have not been selected yet. There are three players who decided to observe the round instead of join it orbiting you. Two of them are encouraging you to “do something funny”.
I would inform them that any admin intervention in a round outside of rule enforcement is considered an event, and doing these too often, especially before the round has even properly gotten underway, is not a good idea as you need to give the game & players time to create their own stories before meddling in the round. Furthermore, if I WERE to comply and “do something funny” such as select a non-standard antag like a head of staff or pun pun, etc, then next round there will likely be 3-4 players orbitting me asking me to “do something funny”, so always listening to players who want you to admeme is not a great idea.
Scenario 2
This scenario takes place on LRP. The Head of Security has decided to coup the Captain. The Head of Personnel agrees with the Head of Security and has taken up arms in case it is necessary to aid in effecting the arrest of the Captain. The Captain is hiding with the Quartermaster in the cargo shuttle to avoid the Clown who has stolen the captains saber as a non-antag. There are five people named in this scenario. Please describe what actions, if any, you would take in relation to each, and why.
Before dealing with this at all I would wonder to myself why I chose to join LRP to begin with, before going over the various parties involved in this issue:
Firstly, the HoS and the HoP.
I would inform them that they should probably ahelp or fax about these matters before doing them (if they have not already)
If their reasons are justified, and they only use the arms as a last resort, I would understand the HoP arming themselves and the coup happening and likely let them go on with that roleplay.
If not justified, thats self-antagging as a command member, which are held to a higher standard, and would likely entail a (temp) roleban.
The captain is hiding off-station which they should not be doing since that is stalling the round plus conduct unbecoming of a command member, so probably ahelp them about that and give them a note for that. If they have had further poor conduct as captain (they probably have if the HoS and HoP want to overthrow and arrest them) they may also need a command roleban.
As for the clown, I would ahelp & note them for that considering they should not have stolen caps saber as a non-antag, especially if they are attacking or threatening the captain with it. (Which I assume so since cap is hiding for them) If the player has a history of self antagging as a clown/mime, I would roleban them from these 2 roles since they clearly do not understand the roles are meant to primarily entertain the crew, not just be a giant pain to security and command staff.
Scenario 3
You are ahelping a player about an issue. The player has no prior noted issues. A few days earlier, an admin had told you that this type of situation should result in a temporary ban for a first offense, and you are confident that this situation is not substantially different from the type that admin was describing. During the ahelp, another admin pings you on Discord with a link to the ongoing ahelp and tells you to just indefinitely ban them and make them appeal. Excluding trialmins and headmins, all admins are equally “ranked”. A headmin is not currently available.
I would primarily rely on my own opinion of the severity of the issue, and take one of the following actions depending on my opinion plus a discussion with the available admins:
Either tempban them and consult a headmin later on to see if it should be escalated to a permban, or permban them and consult a headmin later on to see if it should be reduced to a tempban. I would probably go with the tempban option since you can tempban them for the offense pending discussion with the admin team if there is a need for further and more drastic action to be taken against them.
