Cameras. Make them better

Let warden be more incentivized to actually stay at warden.

okay editing this because this was worded poorly

Cameras at the moment are clunky as hell. It’s almost impossible to know which camera is where, and good luck actually following a suspect.

I’d be fine with it absolutely disabling your character if that’s fine. Just. GOD!

would be nice if each camera had a button that allowed you to connect to the nearest cameras or something. allowing you to jump from camera to camera.

There is a somewhat related issue with the “AI eye” and cameras: while it is easy to move the Eye around, there does not seem to be a way to quickly warp it to the coordinates of someone on the crew monitor or to someone otherwise visible to an operational camera. (The AI does not physically walk around the station, after all.)

Having a minimap with cameras like with the health and power monitor would be nice.
Altho warden should not leave sec, period. Their job is not even to watch cameras, it is to manage sec.

If a warden gets bored, they should cryo, not roam around the station.

you know how much that logic sucks for RP.

Then the warden role is poorly designed.
But as it is atm, they are not supposed to leave.
If they want to be talking to people constantly about non-sec matters, they can choose another role. Or they can just wait for people to come to their front desk, which they should be manning.

Perhaps what could be done for the wardens monitor is have cameras scan for faces and IDs and jump to various criminals around the station, allowing security to keep tabs on released inmates or suspicious individuals.

That is def. a bit too powerful. Cameras are already uncounterable short of breaking every single one you see, and even then that won’t help if it will autodetect you as you approach.

AI is already such a big showstopper that it is as popular as a target as the armory itself. Giving sec the same power is too much.

Cameras should work like AI eye, that’ll make it so much more usefull

I was thinking the same, but still feels a bit too powerful and oversimplified.
I find it fun having to choose what camera exactly you want to look trough. As well as more immersive.
It also cuts down on their power a bit.

Interesting middle ground: what if we made cameras visible as “sectors”? You select either the individual camera or the sector of cameras, and the sector would have, say, 4-8 cameras hooked up to each other, which lets you view the whole thing as one. It wouldn’t be as powerful as the AI eye, nor as weak as current cameras. It would allow, say, bar/kitchen/dining room to be viewed as one, all of sec, medical, etc.

I think that a good compromise is navigation similar to SCP-079 in Secret Lab: all cameras viewed have button-access to the nearest 4 cameras. SCP-079 also has a map that allows it to select any camera on that floor from a top-down view, but I don’t think that would fit Warden’s gameplay loop too well, since 079 lacks any analogue to the Crew Monitor. Having camera “sectors” like geuber mentioned available to view in the list would be a nice fix for certain areas that are split across a few different cameras.
My proposal is to add WASD control to the current camera UI which will move the view to the closest camera in the direction you’ve pressed, with either 4 or 8 total options depending on how freeform we want the movement to be.

yeah this is kinda what I had when I said “add buttons for going to nearby cameras”

I second adding buttons. I also would ADORE to be able to examine people and objects from the cams. Not detail examination of course, but being able to see the name of someone with an uncovered face would be invaluable.

I like the idea, but this would need the group itself to be mapped, which would increase mapping workload exponentially. And would result in broken groups for months until someone gets to fixing them.
Simple is best imo

you could just generate a graph and make sure each nodes has at-most 4 edges grouped by position.

personally I think having keeping it as it is but allowing the viewer to right click a target and choose ‘follow’ could be good where the cam would auto-switch if they are in view of a cam and left your current view. it would be less powerful than AI-eye as you’d first need to locate them on a camera but would be more realistic in the sense that if a cam operator found someone that they wanted to follow irl they would just follow them camera to camera.

FNAF Camera Menu.

Show the whole station with camera locations. That could work out.

Bad on small monitors. MAYBE if it was resizable.

We already have a system for this too.
The engineering monitors all support clicking on specify components in the station map to jump to them.
You can always zoom out/scroll.
