In-game Username: ChuckWiles
Discord username: ChuckWiles
Characters you play: Chuck Wiles
On average, how many hours do you expect to admin per week: 10
Days you are available to admin on: T-F work depending, more on Saturday and Sunday.
How old are you? 27
Do you have any SS14 experience outside of Wizard’s Den servers, or any SS13 experience? I have some experience from ss13 when I mained geneticist, but that was a long time ago.
Do you have prior administration experience (SS13/SS14 experience preferred, please also post a way for us to verify this)? No game administration experience that is verifiable.
Have you ever been banned from any SS14 or SS13 servers? I have not. I’ve never even been boinked, if you would believe it.
What are you primarily interested in doing as an admin? In-character roleplaying as CentComm would be my favorite job. Melding the narrative and the admin elements together to form Ludonarrative harmony is amazing. When I play Command and use the red phone or fax, or when I’m a lowly passenger and use an altar, I would love to have another being on the otherside answer when the station is truly in need.
In-game rule enforcement would be amazing as well. I’ve seen several and have called them out, including A-helping. I just want to help make the game better for everyone.
I would also like to review ban appeals, but I would need experience as an admin before I do so.
I’m also a fan of “detective work,” so out-of-game rule enforcement would also be really cool.
What are you least interested in doing as an admin? In game events can be really cool, but I lack the flare to do so in a way I think most people would enjoy.
Detail Questions
What role do you think game admins serve on our servers?
Primarily rule enforcement and arbitration when actions are in the grey-zone between breaking the word and the spirit of the law. Admins also helped new players learn how the game works, and offer a (hopefully) good environment for learning to let more people learn to love the game.
Why do you want to become an administrator for SS14?
I’ve fallen in love with the game and it’s community. There is nothing else like it anywhere that I’ve been able to find. I want as many people as possible to join it, and help make it the best that it can be. I can’t code, and mapping is still beyond my abilities, but delving into rules and figuring out the best way to help everyone move forward is something I’ve been doing for years IRL. I’d love to be an admin so I can help foster an environment to become something more people will flock to. I do what I can in-game, but having a stronger presence would increase that impact.
How do you feel about the current roleplay status on the servers?
So far, roleplay has been good. Sometimes, people leave a little at the door and only do the bare minimum, but in my experience that prompted more experienced RPers to bring it back into RP.
Other than banning problematic players, what admin actions do you believe have the biggest positive impact?
Again, fostering a good environment for the community to grow. This can be through helping new players or ones inexperienced with tasks, roleplaying as CentComm or the Gods, or admin events where they throw something new into the mix to change things up.
Also, rule enforcement doesn’t need to always result in a ban. Minor things might take a boink or some creative liberties and at the end of the day the rules still get followed.
Have you ever had a negative experience in the game or with a game admin? If so what, if anything, would you do to prevent other players from experiencing this?
Directly with an admin I’ve never experienced anything negative. There’s been once that I’ve A-helped and it took a long while before anyone responded, but that was early on and hasn’t happened since.
Have you ever had a good experience with the game or a game admin? If so, what was it?
Almost every A-Help I’ve sent has gotten an immediate and effective response.
Also, there was this super cool admin round where there was an invisible monster. Super cool.
Scenario Questions
Scenario 1
It is the start of the round. There are 60 players on the server. The game mode is traitors, traitors have not been selected yet. There are three players who decided to observe the round instead of join it orbiting you. Two of them are encouraging you to “do something funny”.
I do not. The game hasn’t really started yet, if I was intending to do an admin event I would have run a poll, and I don’t feel the need to inject anything that early into a round anyway. If they persist, and the rounds have been going really well, I might make a hydroponics bay cognizant, but definitely nothing more until I have run it by someone who’s done things longer.
Scenario 2
This scenario takes place on LRP. The Head of Security has decided to coup the Captain. The Head of Personnel agrees with the Head of Security and has taken up arms in case it is necessary to aid in effecting the arrest of the Captain. The Captain is hiding with the Quartermaster in the cargo shuttle to avoid the Clown who has stolen the captains saber as a non-antag. There are five people named in this scenario. Please describe what actions, if any, you would take in relation to each, and why.
Almost everything depends on if the Captain has deserved what is happening. Considering that the QM is with the Captain, I imagine not. Before I start, I’d check A-help to see if anyone asked for admin assistance. If not, I’d move onto logs. If I still don’t find anything, I’d try to gather information from the Captain, QM, and HoS to figure out what’s going on, in that order.
If everything seemed to have progressed without any rules being broken and naturally through a difference in opinion from the heads, I’d throw a CentComm official in to figure everything out in character.
If rules have been broken, I’d boink to cease the behavior, and mentally start preping for a role ban. Naturally, I’d make a note for everyone involved and what I think.
Notably, there’s a possibility that either pair of Heads are communicating outside SS14, so that should be accounted for.
Depending on when this conflict started and when the clown stole the saber, they might just be trying to help the HoS and HoP. Clowns aren’t held to the same standard as Command, so I’d address that last, if needed to be addressed at all.
Scenario 3
You are ahelping a player about an issue. The player has no prior noted issues. A few days earlier, an admin had told you that this type of situation should result in a temporary ban for a first offense, and you are confident that this situation is not substantially different from the type that admin was describing. During the ahelp, another admin pings you on Discord with a link to the ongoing ahelp and tells you to just indefinitely ban them and make them appeal. Excluding trialmins and headmins, all admins are equally “ranked”. A headmin is not currently available.
When in doubt, always go with the lesser punishment. If they cause trouble again, there’s more evidence that can be used against them. It’s better for the guilty to go free than the innocent be punished, after all.
Then I’d talk to a headmin when the opportunity arises and figure out what I should do in the future and relay that to the other two admins.
