Cold slowdown should be reverted

It is currently just an item check that is countered by setting your spawn loadout to have winter gear equipped. It is also very unfun and hated by just about everyone.

It pretty much prevents spacewalking without EVA, so I can see why maints might want to keep it around.

Also makes cryo patients take the damn lepo shot instead of running off and dying cause they are wearing their hardsuit before warming up. :godo:

You can but it will be old man speed.

Of course emergency EVA offers still loads of insulation so with winter boots you are pretty damn resiient to cold, I wonder if scarf could be enough for 100% immunity.

90% of crew does not have 2 braincells to combine syringe with 10u of pun and 5u saline for fighting nukies, I would not expect them to get spacemix for chasing after them into space in jumpsuit. :godo:

If you use winter coat you instantly get fucked the moment get off grid/on lattice. You at very least need emergency EVA insulation for some amount of protection from cold unless you are doing desperation non-combat spacewalk.

EEVA+winter boots still lets some cold in but 5u lepo every minute or so is all you need to be up to speed… Lepo soaked smokes for spacewalks? :godo:

emergency EVA does not provide enough insulation to stand on lattices/space. that’s the main thing that sets it apart from actual EVA softsuits - if you try to go out into space in it, you’ll freeze.

also, to address OP’s point a bit - yeah, cold slowdown is easily counteracted by wearing a coat… but there are other pieces of outerwear that you might want to use instead of a coat, like an armoured vest or a tank harness. if you want a functioning backslot, you can’t use a coat.

Sadly i have to agree, cold damage is literally just a item check at 90% of the time can be countered with just the winter boots.
If maintainers want to stop space walking without hardsuits then they should be making space actually lethal again. As for cold itself we probably won’t see any mayor improvements until newmed is added where you likely will have to deal with freezing organs if you dare to breathe freezon or go without a hardsuit into space.

from scrolling though the thread, it seems that the main problems that were brought up were:

  • you get cold/slow down too fast

and

  • winter clothing is too insulation making it just an item check

I also agree, that the spacing became some mess which I will explain later, and the slowdown was to prevent people from convenient space walking without any slowdown resistances also, cold damage(from temperature) is very weak compared to heat (even if you have +50% more cold damage with the increased cold threshold of reptilians you still won’t even get 50 damage in 10 seconds as compared to the heat which even 1-2 seconds of exposure (on extreme temperatures, minor heat is not an issue) even with reptilian heat threshold (and maybe their good old heat resistance (rip)) is still enough you fry you and cook you alive over time and assuming you stopped, the mechanic is that there is poor conductivity between the environment and your body which leaves the remaining energy to be much more lethal that it should in real life, you can enter a wet sauna 120 degrees celsius for a few seconds and survive with minor scalding. here a few seconds in the sauna will cook you from the inside out regardless of how heat resistance race you have, reptilians will get as quickly fried as moths and dionas. The slowing down was due to maybe above, as the cold damage is nothing compared to heat damage and they wanted to rebalance the temperature mechanics of the game so cold would be as lethal as heat. also, the spacing became a mess it started with space pen removal which you can learn more about here: Discord which of course started because they made atmospherics simulation a joke(just play the mining station 14 server to find out how it was) heroic since Space station 13 was an atmospheric simulation initially. and somehow they thought that spacing was bad again and they… reduced the spacing damage? i mean why didn’t they just add the space pen back? and here we are with weird mechanics as a strong counter-powerplay racewise following the GitHub area they are planning a full mechanic rework here: NewMed, Implementing Medical Gameplay into SS14 by Jezithyr · Pull Request #19383 · space-wizards/space-station-14 · GitHub
and the entire thing is paused and we got left where the SS14 had a very poor roleplay perspective (antagonist sabotaging as they like was removed good, but SOP was also removed from MRP servers bad) and also a poor mechanic perspective, (each race doesn’t feel as unique compared to 13 and maybe only 2 races feel viable for me after some testing arachnids(for a direct upgrade) and reptilians(most challenging race) and probably the developers didn’t left the game on its legendary legacy state (2022) before beginning to work on the chemistry and medical overhaul.

I agree the way they updated the game and how it is left (off course until that merge pull is completed) feels very boring, there is very little that can be experimented on each round( LRP servers) and there are no many differences playstyles, I also have done a rebalancing issue with vox race as it is the challenge mechanic it provides you does not reward you as much back as it should.
