Events leading to the ban

Normal round as chemist, was given large amounts of carpotoxin and asked repeatedly to make cognizine. I cannot do this without the help of botany, so I asked for galaxythistle as I already had aloe.

Earlier in the round, the CMO was gibbed in medbay so I and another chemist prepared weapons in case we were attacked again after a red alert. The weapons were fire extinguishers containing phlogiston and clf3 to act as flamethrowers if we were ever attacked. We tested these on eachother and noted that they didnt really do much damage, about 20-40 heat depending on the spray.

After asking botany many times, most of them resulting in them asking us to make them things like acetone, i asked on last time for galaxythistle over the radio, and they simply replied “nah”. Both in character and out, i felt justifiably annoyed, and we decided to rough them up as a message, chemistry v botany. Our intentions were not to crit or kill anyone, but simply send a message.

We ran into botany, sprayed the botanist, and ran back to chem. Very quicky (<60 second), we ran back to botany to check on him. Again, we had not intended to round remove him and were going to revive him if we had gone over the top. I had even previously prepared 50 regenerative meshes earlier in the round so there was no way I couldn’t heal and and all damage I had done.

When we returned to botany, the botanist was gone. No sign of his body, no ash, nothing to indicate his death. We found a PDA on the ground but it wasn’t his, so we assumed he’d gone off to sec to escalate the rivalry, which would have been fair enough. The round lasted maybe another 10 minutes so we didn’t find anything else concerning after that. The next round began and I got aHelp-ed saying i round removed them on purpose, and a lengthy chat with the admin i was banned indefinitely.

EDIT: Round replay just became available. Round 85608. Attack happens at ~1:13:00, 1 spray from each chemist. Damage may have been increased due to gasses from plants, I’m unsure. Botanist dies at 1:13:44. Body is found at 1:14:30 by borg, and is placed IN A CRATE. As they take the body in a crate to medbay, we check medbay through the window. At 1:14:41 (this is literally cartoon stuff) we pass right by them on the way to check on the botanist at botany. Because the body is in a crate we do not see it is him as we pass. We check out botany and go back to chem with the assumption that we didnt see them at medbay, botany or anywhere in between. Really unfortunate how it turned out in the end, but the way the events unfolded were really unlucky after we made the decision. Because we didnt see them in medbay we didnt know to go there and treat them ourselves.

Reason the ban should be removed

While I of course admit it was a mistake to kill the botanist, it was not intentional in the slightest. I made actions beforehand to limit the damage and assumed it would not be lethal, and even went looking for them afterwards just in case anything had happened. Clearly my efforts didn’t work out, but I seriously don’t know where he ran off to before he apparently died (never found a body). Even at the end of the round, after the END screen came up, I was sprayed about 10 times with the extinguisher and didn’t even ash after 3 minutes of burning, so it can’t have been a gib.

What I did of course was wrong due to the outcomes, but I want to stress that the outcomes were not intentional, and this wouldn’t happen again given the round I have just had.

Further, the admin conversing with me factored “the way i spoke” in aHelp as a further reason to ban me, which I don’t quite understand. I stuck up for myself when I thought I was being painted unfairly, however I admitted the exact same things I wrote here.

Hi, I’m reviewing your case.

You make a far better appeal than your friend did. I’d like to point out that the ‘way you spoke’ (IE being argumentative) wasn’t held against you, just that it didn’t help your case with the handling admins. I would not consider you to have been particularly argumentative.

You’ll be receiving the same ban duration as your friend (Loosely, three day’s time) because I really want to impress upon you that using a lethally dangerous weapon over a slow work day is not It, here. If someone is a new botanist or is just trying to focus on providing food, etc, probably the best thing you could do is just get in there and help them. While that’s not always feasible, jumping to let’s get em with our flamethrowers is just not a valid response, and is not allowed under our self-antag rules. Attacking with knives, bats, etc is similarly frowned upon as you are radically overescalating over a nothingburger issue.
