Events leading to the ban

For your own reference if you’d like to check out the replay it is Leviathan Round 59581. My explanation starts with events occurring around 16:00. The actual reason for ban occurs at 17:21.

I was a Traitor antagonist this round. I was with Smile and Remilia discussing my kill targets. Remilia as my familiar is expected to be privy to the conversation. Smile was along for the ride because we did goofy things earlier and from my point of view Smile would have a very hard time snitching once I was actually being an antagonist.

I mentioned that I need to kill the captain, but there was also an engineer I needed to kill. The engineer’s name was Katie Garratt. I decide to go looking for her and by chance she was right outside of the chapel, where I was having that conversation with the station pets.

I walk up to Katie. Here is the transcript:

Katie Garratt: Are you gonna gib me

Reason the ban should be removed

I have around 550 hours and receive an /adminremark every 110 hours on average, and have never repeated an offense.

This is my first ban, unless we count a joke 1 minute ban from last year for calling luckyshotpictures a piss ghost, which I successfully appealed for.

I would like to think I have good behavior. I was unaware that responding to someone’s in-character query about dying in-character when I have an in-character reason to want them dead was against the rules. I find it likely that this ban was made out of haste. I would disagree that I deserved an indefinite appeal ban. However, if the appeal team stands by the ban reason you can rest assured that I will avoid all uses of “Kill yourself” and similar statements in the future. I enjoy space station 14 and greatly appreciate all the volunteer work that goes into keeping it running, especially on the wizden side of things.

On Discord in #admin-questions I was referenced CptJeanLuc’s message regarding context around a similar issue:

Context is key here, if in character you’re telling the captain that your name is Saves-the-Princess, you killed my lizard dad, prepare to die. That’s probably fine. If you’re having a tantrum in LOOC and start spamming kys kys you’re going to be quickly shown the door.

I feel confident that context is on my side. Again, if it is not and you back this ban reason I will follow the rules going forward. I only ask you give a full explanation comparing the example from CptJeanLuc and my own ban reason. I would not like to make a similar mistake again.

Oh and if this matters I should mention it:

I was never bwoinked and played the entire hour and a half round without issue or admin intervention. That’s over an hour of gameplay after the incident I was banned for.
This seems to be some kind of automated ban, or someone manually downloaded the replay and reviewed it – I am slightly worried if someone manually reviewed this and came to the conclusion that I deserve a voucher ban.

On a less jovial note than the main body of my appeal:
I find it ridiculous I was banned for this. I can accept that I might get a bwoinked mid-round if an admin just saw me say “Kill yourself” without context and this is some kind of zero tolerance rule, but someone presumably had to have looked through the replay to find this, since I was never bwoinked.

I do not find it acceptable that someone would resort to an appeal ban, where I am forced to go through all of this effort (even if I was a little extra for my own benefit) and wait several days to access Wizden servers, because a staff member did not spend one minute looking for context.

I don’t mind this situation all that much because I understand there are growing pains when it comes to training and I find this entire scenario rather humorous, but there are a lot of good-intentioned new players and even well-established community members that would be put off or angered by this. I strongly recommend that enforcement around context is discussed with the admin team.

But thanks guys, I don’t say it enough. Space Station is something I didn’t realize I needed in my life. As a whole you’re killing it.
