Pretty much what it says on the tin, a small portable camera the reporter can carry around instead of dragging the big bulky rollercams, and/or a body cam that can fit in their neck slot to record (could also be used as sec). I mean, we’re in the space age so you’d think we would’ve figured out portable wireless tech, right?
ss13 was initially built as an alien themed atmospherics sim. The 80s alien retro tech has been a strong theme form the start, I love the chunky crt consoles, the crt tvs, the fax machines, the rotary telephones and the big bulky roller cams. We’re in the space age, but not the sleek cut down miniaturised one.

Yeah, I feel like some of the particular anachronism of SS14 is part of its charm.
And as much as portable cameras would be possible given the tech level, dragging the big bulky rollercams is part of the reporter’s identity. It gives them this whole Big Media vibe that a sleek portable camera might not quite capture.
Also, I’m not sure how doable having a camera record things is for SS14.
I learnt a term recently that I like and feel fits SS14 pretty well: Cassette futurism.

That’s actually funny cause I spent like 20 minutes trying to remember that damned term for my comment and just gave up.
I googled alien movie aesthetic design and every other relevant search term I could think to try and find it… Guh…

It is pretty clear that SS13’s original design has been lost over time, and even more so in SS14.

SS13 had cameras which printed out polaroids, they were pretty neat.
