In-game Username: HazelHyena
Discord username: HazelHyena
Characters you play: Hisses-Insleep, Twang Cattenromek, Ceres Silkenwing
On average, how many hours do you expect to admin per week: 5
Days you are available to admin on: Availability is currently good for every night!
How old are you? 27
Do you have any SS14 experience outside of Wizard’s Den servers, or any SS13 experience? About three hours on Delta-V, so nothing significant.
Do you have prior administration experience (SS13/SS14 experience preferred, please also post a way for us to verify this)? None.
Have you ever been banned from any SS14 or SS13 servers? No.
What are you primarily interested in doing as an admin? I want to answer ahelps, check whitelists, go through ban discussions, keep raiders from griefing Hopper and Lizard.
What are you least interested in doing as an admin? Not that I wouldn’t do it now and then, but I don’t have any particular interest in or ideas for admemes. They can shake things up now and then, but especially on Hopper a lot of folks just want to keep their heads down and learn.
Detail Questions
What role do you think game admins serve on our servers?
Caretakers is a good way of summing it up, I think. The rules are there to keep things fair and balanced for all parties, so you make sure they’re observed, follow appropriate procedures for normal violations, and make judgement calls in grey areas - we’re all human, we all make some mistakes, but there are limits.
If people have questions, admins are there to answer them - sometimes people just don’t know what to do, or are baffled, or think something unusual is happening when it’s all working as intended. Clearing these up helps keep players invested.
Lastly, admins have the ability to shake things up, in ways that range from the minor, like Jim Nanotrasen doing an inspection, to the major, like the Cursed Dice incident. These admemes need to be handled carefully, since they can disrupt player experiences, but can make for truly memorable events if correctly applied.
Why do you want to become an administrator for SS14?
I love this game, I love helping people in this game, and becoming an admin feels like a natural extension of both. I don’t mind setting aside some time to make sure everything is running smoothly and that the rules are being observed to everyone’s benefit.
Also, it seems like the admin team is pretty stretched thin somedays. I know my average availability isn’t huge compared to some of the other applications I’ve seen here, but I could stick to it pretty easy with how much I’ve played on average. On the discord, when I mentioned my interest in applying, two admins encouraged me to do so, and it definitely gave me the push I needed.
How do you feel about the current roleplay status on the servers?
I’m pretty happy with it, actually. A lot of people say LRP is NRP, and like - that’s true for tiders and for some folk who just wanna concentrate on the mechanics. But people talk! People try and stay in character, interesting interactions happen besides just the mechanical! I see it every day I play, and it’s nice to see it.
Other than banning problematic players, what admin actions do you believe have the biggest positive impact?
Taking the time to answer ahelps keeps players engaged and feeling like their concerns are being heard, at the very least. Being able to reach out instead of screaming into the void is an important thing.
Have you ever had a negative experience in the game or with a game admin? If so what, if anything, would you do to prevent other players from experiencing this?
Not that I’ve never had negative experiences in the game, but nothing worth mentioning? Sometimes you just have a rough round, y’know.
No issues whatsoever with admins.
Have you ever had a good experience with the game or a game admin? If so, what was it?
Hundreds of great experiences with the game! I’ve taught folks, been taught by folks, had dangerous shootouts and made chems frantically to deal with emergencies. I slayed a dragon with another cargo tech, and hid in a cramped escape pod with the entire engineering department until we escaped the zombie hordes.
And there’ve been good experiences with admins, too. They’ve been there to answer my questions, they’ve added to rounds with admin intervention, they’ve turned raiders into cluwnes and banned em. And on the one occasion an admin spoke to me about my behavior in a round, they spoke and listened thoughtfully, and decided my actions were warranted, or at least understandable within the rules, and not intended to cause harm to another player.
That’s the kind of admin I want to be. Polite and deliberate.
Scenario Questions
Scenario 1
It is the start of the round. There are 60 players on the server. The game mode is traitors, traitors have not been selected yet. There are three players who decided to observe the round instead of join it orbiting you. Two of them are encouraging you to “do something funny”.
Probably just be canadian and apologize to em, although I might do something minor if I can think of something. Anything major wouldn’t feel right with the traitors still getting selected, I think - and maybe it’d be better to hold a vote on a major admeme for next round?
Scenario 2
This scenario takes place on LRP. The Head of Security has decided to coup the Captain. The Head of Personnel agrees with the Head of Security and has taken up arms in case it is necessary to aid in effecting the arrest of the Captain. The Captain is hiding with the Quartermaster in the cargo shuttle to avoid the Clown who has stolen the captains saber as a non-antag. There are five people named in this scenario. Please describe what actions, if any, you would take in relation to each, and why.
Clowns steal things all the time, but if the Captain and QM are hiding from the clown that definitely implies an actual attack by them. While I don’t know the exact course of action (warn v ban), a reprimand of some kind is needed.
The QM is hiding quite reasonably in this circumstance, and they’re allowed to be on the cargo shuttle. No action is necessary.
Cap depends firstly on whether the shuttle is docked or not - if it’s docked, it’s reasonable of them to hide from someone aiming to use such a powerful weapon. If not, the captain isn’t allowed to be off-station for roundstalling reasons. Reprimand, possible temp roleban. The coup also factors into my decision, but the captain still needs to be at least awarned even if the coup was illegal.
HoP can have disablers, but not lethals. If they cleared it with HoS - fine. If not - I’d warn them.
HoS’s actions depend on whether the coup is necessary, but a coup also requires all living heads to agree on it: HS isn’t mentioned and QM is WITH the captain. Unless HS is dead - probably a temporary roleban. You need to set an example, HoS!
Scenario 3
You are ahelping a player about an issue. The player has no prior noted issues. A few days earlier, an admin had told you that this type of situation should result in a temporary ban for a first offense, and you are confident that this situation is not substantially different from the type that admin was describing. During the ahelp, another admin pings you on Discord with a link to the ongoing ahelp and tells you to just indefinitely ban them and make them appeal. Excluding trialmins and headmins, all admins are equally “ranked”. A headmin is not currently available.
Assuming I’m a full admin, we’re of equal rank. Given that I’m confident in my decision, I would ask the other admin why they think this should differ from before - they would need to convince me, and if they failed to, my judgement would stand.
