Initial Infected Rules Question

So, I have a question over the clarification of the rules concerning Initial Infected.

Initial Infected are kind of at an odd place in game lore wise. Like, are they self aware that they are capable of turning into a Zombie on command?

This is an important distinction because it makes the choice of when to turn into a Zombie an important one.

So, let’s look at a scenario.

Say you are an Initial Infected Engineer. How are you supposed to play the turn into the Zombie?

Am I supposed to be self aware that I am infected and trying to turn as many people on the station as possible? If so, then it would behoove me to place myself strategically. Like, maybe use my tools to hack into Medical before I turn to get to the patients. Or, perhaps sow the seeds of chaos by hacking into a command room before I turn so that I can attack and turn a command role. Thus making it a bit easier to turn others because everyone is freaked out that a command role just got turned.

I ask because I don’t want to get in trouble for ‘meta-gaming’ or anything like that. But, if my character is self aware that he can turn into a Zombie on command, wouldn’t it make sense to take advantage of that strategically as much as possible?

If my character is not self aware of this ability, am I supposed to kind of play it off like it’s random? If that’s the case, why isn’t it random for those who want to play Initial Infected to become Zombies? The very fact that it is an action on the action bar like harm and scream makes me think that I’m intended to ‘meta-game’ with it. But, I wanted to ask so that I don’t get into trouble.

I think this kind of helps a bit with your question, but I might be absolutely wrong but meh.

TL;DR from Quartermaster’s link to CE’s clarification;
You can kill anybody you like, but IF and ONLY IF you intend to infect them immediately after. You can’t just randomly kill people and let them sit to infect them later.
For example, you CAN NOT plasma flood the whole station or terrorize the bar to make a mass of uninfected bodies,

But you CAN call a station meeting, murder everyone in the room, and then infect them.

Essentially you can’t “store” bodies that you get for later when you turn. When you kill someone, you HAVE to turn and then infect any victims you intend to turn.

This is why I’m never initial infected. I’m not a huge roleplayer, but even for me, this breaks roleplay, it’s too weird.

Just gonna state that we have no lore. Applying lore to the game for any mechanics right now is moot. Whatever else is thought of by the player.

Aside from that, you can do what you will as long as you’re able to go about your goal. Which is to infect as many people as possible.

If a security officer was the initial infected, they can invite as many people to bar for a “celebration” seal the doors then turn. Causing hysteria and hardly any escape routes for the endangered people.
