In-game Username: JIP_Dawg
Discord username: JIP_Dawg
Characters you play: Jared Elderson, Bill Bilfus, Fred Flint
On average, how many hours do you expect to admin per week: 10-15
Days you are available to admin on: Monday/Friday’s and the weekends.
How old are you? 31
Do you have any SS14 experience outside of Wizard’s Den servers, or any SS13 experience? Some RMC14.
I played a decent bit of SS13 back in 2010. Probably Goonstation.
Do you have prior administration experience (SS13/SS14 experience preferred, please also post a way for us to verify this)? I was an Admin for a Garry’s Mod Trouble in Terrorist Town server back in 2010/11. Unfortunately it’s all been lost to the sands of time so no way to verify.
Have you ever been banned from any SS14 or SS13 servers? No.
What are you primarily interested in doing as an admin? I’m mostly interested in answering Stopping raiders, Answering AHelps, ban appeals, whitelisting, reviewing replays/logs. I also enjoy helping new players with any questions they might have.
One of my favorite aspects of the game when I first started were the silly “admemes” I understand they aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but when done right they give a nice community feel.
What are you least interested in doing as an admin? Probably having to Rules Lawyer the sometimes incredibly specific extremely rare scenario questions in #Admin-Questions.
Detail Questions
What role do you think game admins serve on our servers?
I believe that Admins obviously are there to enforce the rules, keep bad actors out and do their best to ensure everyone is having an enjoyable experience. I also think they serve as Ambassadors of the community for WizDen as players are highly likely to have an interaction with one at some point in their play time and how that first time experience is can set the tone. Not only that but I believe admins also help build community through small admemes or even just answering prayers etc.
Why do you want to become an administrator for SS14?
Currently I have almost 500 hours in game and find that a lot of my enjoyment right now comes from observing rounds or answering questions in #Help. I’d like to extend that and help contribute more to the community as I’m no coder, but by helping with monitoring the servers and assisting with whitelisting/unban requests or answering in #admin-questions, yes even the oddly hyper specific scenario ones. Not to mention it’s no secret that admins are stretched thin, and I’d like to help alleviate some of that stress and fill in the cracks so to speak.
How do you feel about the current roleplay status on the servers?
Lizard/Levi: I started my first 200 or so hours here and truly believe that RP is not completely dead. I’ve definitely had good RP experiences on these servers. Yes they are notorious for their lack of RP and while that is true sometimes I do feel like there are still players that will RP when given the chance and some good times can still be had. Sure there are meta/powergamers aplenty but overall I think it’s still closer to LRP than NRP.
Grasshopper: I think Grasshopper is in a truly special place as an LRP server. I think that the mix of Salamander players and new players provides a wonderful middle ground between LRP and MRP and a great learning environment.
Other than banning problematic players, what admin actions do you believe have the biggest positive impact?
As I said previously I think admins are like ambassadors in that responding to Ahelps, even a simple “looking into it”, and showing server presence helps foster a healthy community. Running small gimmicks or answering the odd prayer or two shows to people that someone is listening and available to help if something were to happen. Admin interaction is a big thing that drew me deeper in to this game.
Have you ever had a negative experience in the game or with a game admin? If so what, if anything, would you do to prevent other players from experiencing this?
Really only 2 negative interactions and they were fairly minor.
- I was participating in a riot in front of sec, I walked away after a little bit and then got hit with the bwoink. It was in all caps and came off as aggressive. Looking back I’m sure it was a stressful situation for the admin as I’m sure there were many AHelps and they were trying to respond to it all so I understand the situation.
How I would prevent this? I would try my best to take every situation as even keeled as possible, and do my best to respond to each one without attempt to be too rude.
- I was playing as a SecOff or Detective when I believe an admin changed every single entities name to the same thing. It became impossible to play as Sec as we couldn’t mark anyone as wanted and no one could tell who was doing what. That was unbearable and ruined the round for many. Looking back now I’m willing to bet it was an accident and they did not mean to rename every entity.
I understand as an admin I have the potential to affect rounds in either a positive or negative aspect. When attempting to do any kind of events I’d think of various way this could possibly ruin someone elses round. I understand not every decision will be universally received.
Have you ever had a good experience with the game or a game admin? If so, what was it?
Mainly just good interactions with them via discord or the various centcom events or in round events. I really enjoyed the “Friday Dance party” 2 minute thing one admin put on that was ran on lizard/levi.
Regarding in the game I’ve had tons of good experiences through various gimmicks performed or just fun RP in general.
Scenario Questions
Scenario 1
It is the start of the round. There are 60 players on the server. The game mode is traitors, traitors have not been selected yet. There are three players who decided to observe the round instead of join it orbiting you. Two of them are encouraging you to “do something funny”.
I’d say “Ok, watch this” Proceed to do nothing, maybe go to the bathroom and get some water IRL.
Realistically this would largely depend on the server I’m currently on. I’d say that it’s to early for shenanigans and would want to watch how the round pans out before making any kind of hard decisions. If they continue to egg me on I’d simply ignore.
Scenario 2
This scenario takes place on LRP. The Head of Security has decided to coup the Captain. The Head of Personnel agrees with the Head of Security and has taken up arms in case it is necessary to aid in effecting the arrest of the Captain. The Captain is hiding with the Quartermaster in the cargo shuttle to avoid the Clown who has stolen the captains saber as a non-antag. There are five people named in this scenario. Please describe what actions, if any, you would take in relation to each, and why.
First I would check if anyone has been AHelped and depending on anything here I’d start there. If no Ahelps I would proceed as follows.
I would also observe the clown and see if it’s just clown things or more serious/malicious self-antagging. I’d check and see what they’re are attempting to do or have done already. Assuming logs are logging if they’ve killed anyone already or harmed multiple people I would bwoink and question them.
Next my initial assumption would be that the coup may be warranted (perhaps related to the clown issue) and would observe quietly and see if they have a valid RP reason for a coup as unfit captain’s are allowed to be arrested and stripped of their rank. Depending on further info it sounds more like an IC issue.
As for the Captain and QM I’d ensure the captain isn’t just permanently off the station, a few minutes in space on the cargo shuttle is fine as long as they have an IC reason to. If they continue to fly around space hiding from clown and possibly HoP and HoS at this point I’d bwoink both QM as cargo can now no longer do their job. Captain for not being on station for an extended amount of time.
Overall most of this sounds like IC issues and if nothing serious happens while observing I’d download the replay and review, issuing role / command bans if necessary.
Scenario 3
You are ahelping a player about an issue. The player has no prior noted issues. A few days earlier, an admin had told you that this type of situation should result in a temporary ban for a first offense, and you are confident that this situation is not substantially different from the type that admin was describing. During the ahelp, another admin pings you on Discord with a link to the ongoing ahelp and tells you to just indefinitely ban them and make them appeal. Excluding trialmins and headmins, all admins are equally “ranked”. A headmin is not currently available.
I would explain to the other admin that X admin said this is normally a temp ban. I would proceed to ban them with a “temporary ban” as it can be later reviewed by a Head Admin or others and upgraded as seen fit.
An immediate indefinite ban for what possibly should have been a temp ban could be seen poorly by the banned player and could result in angry posts in Discord or on the forums for something that could have easily been avoided by simply waiting for further review. If no headmins are available in the length of temp ban I would simply poll the rest of the admins.
