Days you are available to admin on: Any day except for Saturday.
How old are you? 19
Do you have any SS14 experience outside of Wizard’s Den servers, or any SS13 experience? I co-own and run Cosmatic Drift, and have played several other SS14 servers a fair amount.
Do you have prior administration experience (SS13/SS14 experience preferred, please also post a way for us to verify this)? Adminning occasionally on Cosmatic Drift, as well as being a tempmin for the last 1 month give or take.
Have you ever been banned from any SS14 or SS13 servers? No.
What are you primarily interested in doing as an admin? Enforcing rules in-game and out-of-game. Keeping an eye on the ahelp relay and getting on to deal with scenarios whenever necessary. Helping newer players as well as solving any issues players are having to the best of my ability.
What are you least interested in doing as an admin? Events and ban appeals.
Detail Questions
What role do you think game admins serve on our servers?
I think admins are there to ensure the game remains fun, fair, and safe. Generally that means via enforcing rules, “fair” being things like cheating and bug abuse and “fun” being RP rules as well as rules like “don’t be a dick”. Part of that can also be guiding people, whether on rules they’re curious about, or the game as a whole that they may be inexperienced with. There’s also spicing up the game through events and the like.
Why do you want to become an administrator for SS14?
While promoted to a tempmin, I’ve realized how frankly awful admin coverage is. And, as much as I’ve joked about it, I do often sit there on a server for awhile, or look through the relay, and see tons of ahelps that I kind of just have to sit there and wave away, which really sucks. I feel that I’m available enough and knowledgeable enough to work as a full admin and help out with the amount of load that’s present, instead of just having to ban raiders. I’ve also come to realize that I enjoy doing it more than I thought, and think I’d be a good fit.
How do you feel about the current roleplay status on the servers?
It depends a shocking amount on the server, but I don’t necessarily think that’s a bad thing. Different players have different expectations for the game, and as a whole I think players are making the culture they enjoy playing it. That’s not to say it couldn’t certainly use some work sometimes from people who have no interest at all, but generally speaking I think the game still manages to be fun and have varied enough amounts of RP to be fine.
Other than banning problematic players, what admin actions do you believe have the biggest positive impact?
Without a doubt helping confused or stuck players. Oftentimes newer players have no idea what they’re doing, and even with the guidebook people aren’t able to figure out what they’re supposed to do, instead resorting to ahelp as it’s generally the most available option- if they ask for help at all. It also often happens that players are affected by bugs that negative effect their experience, but can be easily counteracted either with the correct method or simple admin help, which is an important thing for admins to do in my eyes.
Have you ever had a negative experience in the game or with a game admin? If so what, if anything, would you do to prevent other players from experiencing this?
Probably my most negative experience has been with raiders- though that’s an obvious one. The other time that stands out to me was a long time ago, when I joined a round as a CMO on Salamander and was gibbed within 5 minutes of spawning, by a syndie doctor who had no objectives related to me and just wanted my stuff. It wasn’t a rulebreak, but it sucked. Thankfully, Lucky was on as an admin, and was nice enough to respawn me as a different character. I htink that was a good way to handle it and I’d do something similar if I could.
Have you ever had a good experience with the game or a game admin? If so, what was it?
I’ve had a lot of good experiences. The one above, or when Chief_Engineer had a bit of fun with me as RD over CC faxes. More recently on Grasshopper I’ve had a lot of fun experiences with newer players, such as volunteering to teach solars to any engineer who wanted it, leading to 5 engineers in hardsuits following me through the hallway and into the solars airlock.
Scenario Questions
Scenario 1
It is the start of the round. There are 60 players on the server. The game mode is traitors, traitors have not been selected yet. There are three players who decided to observe the round instead of join it orbiting you. Two of them are encouraging you to “do something funny”.
Probably just ignore them. That’s what I think I would do 99% of the time if people told me to “do something funny”- I don’t really intend to do events a whole lot and doing them on a whim like that isn’t a great idea imho.
Scenario 2
This scenario takes place on LRP. The Head of Security has decided to coup the Captain. The Head of Personnel agrees with the Head of Security and has taken up arms in case it is necessary to aid in effecting the arrest of the Captain. The Captain is hiding with the Quartermaster in the cargo shuttle to avoid the Clown who has stolen the captains saber as a non-antag. There are five people named in this scenario. Please describe what actions, if any, you would take in relation to each, and why.
Head of Security - This would majorly depend on what actions the Captain had taken prior in the round, and the opinions of the other command. If the Captain has been neglecting their duties, acting recklessly, endangering the station, ignoring the law, etc., then it would be reasonable to attempt a “coup”, so long as most / all of command agree. If this was the case, I would also say the Head of Security should try and escalate before “taking up arms” with the Head of Security, though that’s fairly minor as it’s not unreasonable to assume someone wouldn’t want to be demoted. If it wasn’t the case, I would either warn them or give them a roleban depending on how far the situation had escalated, likely a warning had it merely been planned, vs. a roleban had they actually carried out a violent coup.
Head of Personnel - Similarly to the HoS, this would depend heavily on the Captain’s earlier actions, either being justified should the Captain be severely out of line to a warning if they were planning or a roleban had they taken an unnecessary action. The HoP may be under extra scrutiny for arming themselves, but this similarly depends on how violent the Captain had been prior in the shift, and if they had any reason to believe arming themselves was necessary.
Captain - Again depending on their actions thus far in the round. Had a coup been justified, I find a roleban is likely. Had it not been justified, the Captain is likely not under any scrutiny for that action. As for hiding on the cargo shuttle, I believe it is possible it could be considered neglect of their position to do so, but this would likely depend on the situation on-station and how dangerous the clown actually was- I feel worst-case this would warrant a warning as going onto the cargo shuttle is a fairly minor offense.
Quartermaster - The QM seems fairly justified here regardless. Assuming Cargo isn’t in dire need of money and thus the cargo shuttle isn’t immediately needed, the worst they could be doing is hiding the Captain during an attempting coup, which seems fairly like an IC issue, unless the Captain had been causing major issues for the round, though I still see this being little more than a warning. This is especially true if the Captain had ordered the QM to do so, as it is reasonable for the QM to follow such an order from the Captain.
Clown - Stealing such an item as a non-antag is squarely self-antagging, but how severe depends on what they did with it. Assuming they just took it and ran, I imagine a simple warning should suffice, also assuming it was a first offense. Should they refuse to give it back, or escalate further to using the saber to attack others, it is likely I would issue a short ban.
Scenario 3
You are ahelping a player about an issue. The player has no prior noted issues. A few days earlier, an admin had told you that this type of situation should result in a temporary ban for a first offense, and you are confident that this situation is not substantially different from the type that admin was describing. During the ahelp, another admin pings you on Discord with a link to the ongoing ahelp and tells you to just indefinitely ban them and make them appeal. Excluding trialmins and headmins, all admins are equally “ranked”. A headmin is not currently available.
I’ll assume the issue is something that I would reasonably say could be punished via a temporary ban for a first offense, and thus I have reason to believe the first admin. In this situation I would likely take the advice of the initial admin, granting a temporary ban unless further reasonable justification could be provided by the second admin- this would be something like a zero-tolerance rulebreak I had missed. I would then contact a headmin about the situation, and ask for clarification about the action I took to ensure it was appropriate.
