In-game Username: lunarcomets
Discord username: lunarcomets
Characters you play: Nyra-Niima, Nocturna-Niimina
On average, how many hours do you expect to admin per week: Fluctuates, but around 20?
Days you are available to admin on: Most days in the afternoon, from 5-10 PST.
How old are you? 18.
Do you have any SS14 experience outside of Wizard’s Den servers, or any SS13 experience? Little, in other servers when I first began playing the game.
Do you have prior administration experience (SS13/SS14 experience preferred, please also post a way for us to verify this)? None.
Have you ever been banned from any SS14 or SS13 servers? No.
_ Admins have the ability to perform various tasks which are not available to the average player. An incomplete list of these tasks is: in-game rule enforcement, in-game events, ban appeals, and out-of-game rule enforcement through things like replay/log reviews in response to player reports. With these, and any other tasks you’re aware of in mind, answer the following two questions. _
What are you primarily interested in doing as an admin? Helping other admins with whatever needs to be done would be my main interest as an admin, especially if it involved planning and executing any sort of an event for any one of the servers.
What are you least interested in doing as an admin? While I’d still be willing to engage in this, tedious work with logs, previous ahelps and possibly appeals sound incredibly tedious to deal with, even with the efforts of multiples.
_ Answer the following questions in detail, so we can get a better idea of how you’d approach adminning. _
_ What role do you think game admins serve on our servers? _
Ultimately, I believe the role of game admins are to ensure that as many players can enjoy the game as possible. In the perspective of both regular banning of problematic players and interesting events, admins ensure player experiences are as quality as they possibly can be, within reason.
_ Why do you want to become an administrator for SS14? _
The reason is, again, to be able to help with any problems there are with admining as a whole. I’ve heard lots of times from both players and admins that, the load of a single admin is already quite a lot, and that because of that, people are trying to reduce that workload as much as possible. I want to be able to reduce that workload through being an admin myself, and if it means I get to give back to the game I enjoy, all the better!
How do you feel about the current roleplay status on the servers?
Currently, I believe that the roleplay status for all servers are fine. Salamander has the roleplay you’d expect from an MRP server, and the other servers have the expectations for LRP servers. However, that is only on lower population hours. During peak times, when even Salamander is nearing eighty players, it’s clear that the roleplay level deteriorates to less than what they should be. MRP becomes LRP, and LRP becomes NRP (which, due to LRP popularity, is quite often). It’s an issue I think is fixable, but does require a great amount of time and effort to eventually achieve.
Other than banning problematic players, what admin actions do you believe have the biggest positive impact?
The actions that have the biggest positive impact from admins have to be from whenever they positively interfere with a round through major events, or simple and small events as well. The game is all about a person’s story aboard an often hazardous space station. If an admin is able to enhance people’s stories through the actions they take with events and such? They shouldn’t always do so, but! Those memories do last inside of player’s minds for long times.
Have you ever had a negative experience in the game or with a game admin? If so what, if anything, would you do to prevent other players from experiencing this?
At this moment, I cannot think of any negative experiences I have had with a game admin.
Have you ever had a good experience with the game or a game admin? If so, what was it?
In hindsight yes, but not so directly. During my first few days on the game, I was a character with just the first name ‘Nyra’ which, isn’t allowed in the rules. Eventually, I got ahelped for it when I became command so, of course I thought of a surname until I landed on ‘Niima.’ From then on, I’ve been able to make friends that I don’t think I would’ve made otherwise since, having that last name made me think more about who my character was as a person. It led to me, having the amount of time that I do, all while feeling I’ve made genuine connections. It’s not directly positive, yet I would still like to thank the admin who ahelped me directly, if it was physically possible.
_ The following are scenarios, respond with how you would handle each as an administrator. Respond with the assumption that you are an administrator with full access to the admin tools, and that you have all the knowledge needed to use these tools. Respond in detail, explain the reasons behind decisions you make and describe any assumptions you are making. When you need to make an assumption, it is preferred for you to describe how differences in the assumption would affect your actions. _
It is the start of the round. There are 60 players on the server. The game mode is traitors, traitors have not been selected yet. There are three players who decided to observe the round instead of join it orbiting you. Two of them are encouraging you to “do something funny”.
At the beginning of the round, I don’t want to do anything that could possibly interfere with the on-going round. I wouldn’t alter anything crew-facing in the round, but as a treat to those two players and that third, I’d modify their ghosts. Change colors, sizes, make them vibrate, things of that sort that I’ve personally enjoyed as one of those ghosts following an admin. If they push for me to be ‘funnier,’ I’d only put on midi-music from that point onwards, and- depending on my mood, either straight tell them no, or subtly try to push their focus elsewhere with in-game occurrences and/or comments to both: have their focus on something other than me so they can enjoy the sights of the game while I still do my job as an admin.
You see a clown using crayon to write on the floor in front of security. The clown writings are negative things about security, like “shitsec”. A secoff tells the clown that they’re being arrested for vandalism, stuns them, and cuffs them. Before the secoff is able to get the clown into the brig, a passenger slips the secoff, causing them to lose their baton, then uses the baton to stun another secoff that comes to help as the clown runs away. The passenger escapes through disposals. Having heard an AOS radio callout, the detective enters maintenance near disposals and shoots the passenger to crit. There are four players in this scenario, the clown, the passenger, the secoff, and the detective.
(I will answer this assuming that this occurs before the recent PR removing the detective from security.)
First and foremost, I’d have to check the antagonist status of both the clown, and the passenger, as if they are, the actions that they’ve taken to antagonize shouldn’t be much to note. However, if they are not antagonists, then they could be liable for breaking the self-antag rules.
The clown, while they are being an annoyance to security as a whole, is not actively injuring, breaking in, or otherwise interrupting security work to the point of self-antagging. I’d give them no warning, note, or anything that shift. However, if the clown continues it for multiple shifts after, I’d look into it further, for any potential meta grudging of security.
The secoff did fail to properly de-escalate the situation by only going in for the stun of the clown after saying the crime due to, admittedly, vandalism. However, while de-escalation is within the rules, this specific case is best left to be dealt with IC by the HoS, any lawyers, and the two parties themselves, assuming that they got to the brig without slipping, of course.
Here, the passenger is the one who is most st fault. As a non-antag, a passenger should not be antagonizing security with their job, by both slipping the first officer, potentially letting an antag get away because of it and also, stunning the second officer which only ensures that the possible antag gets away because of their actions. Because of this, I’d ask for their reason for interrupting with security and stunning the one officer. If it’s anything along the lines of ‘because it was funny,’ I’d simply give them a harsh warning and respective note, possibly a temporary ban depending on if they are being aggressive. Otherwise, I’d give them a moderate warning depending on their answer, give them similar note, and remember their name in case they repeat the act again.
As for the detective, they also failed to properly escalate the situation between themself and the AOS. However, in comparison to the officer, this situation is more severe as the detective utilized lethals against the passenger in an AOS situation. On green, it is incredibly concerning. Blue, still concerning, and on red, least so. Non-Lethals should’ve still been attempted on all three however, unless the passenger was known to be armed with more than soap and stun batons. Using ahelp, I would ask them their reason for using lethals against the passenger. If it is reasonable, such as believing that the passenger was armed in the heat of the moment on red alert, then I’d just give them a verbal warning to attempt to de-escalate properly in the future, with no notes. With an explanation such as ‘they could have slipped me’ on green alert, I’d warn them still to properly escalate the situation in the future more firmly, and this time give them a note on the behavior.
You and another admin have been adminning for around an hour. The rate of issues has been easily manageable due to having 2 admins. Neither of you have been talking in admin chat. You are using ahelp to warn a player for breaking a rule when the other admin joins the ahelp and confirms that it is against the rules, but that it’s fine in this case and they can ignore the rule for the rest of the round. You haven’t taken any other admin actions yet, such as applying a ban or writing a note.
No matter what the rule is or who the other admin is, I’d use the admin chat to ask the other admin why the player is allowed to ignore the rule for the round, seeing as a rule break should be cause for a warning at the very least. Depending on the answer I get and the severity of the rule broken, I’d either leave the case be (with rules such as single word names) or refer to another admin or two for further input through Discord, since I believe that a moderate rule break shouldn’t be ignored like that, especially in repeated offenses. In the latter situation, I would *then* talk with the second admin again about what I’ve been told, and what I personally believe should be done from the knowledge. Hopefully, we would come to a consensus on what is the best course of action from there, and with that, I/they would give the proper notes, bans, or anything else the player should be recieving, if anything at all.
