Detail Questions
What role do you think game admins serve on our servers?
For servers that are effectively the ‘vanilla’ SS14 experience, admins serve the role of curating a place for players to experience SS14 ‘as intended’ so to speak. This means that the majority of admin interactions should imo be handling problem players/rulebreaks, fixing other unintended issues ingame (gamebreaking bugs and stuff), and clarifying things via ahelps (to name a few) as opposed to roundchanging admemes. While these are definitely fun (and i’ve enjoyed being a part of them) they shouldn’t make up anywhere near the majority of Wizden rounds.
Why do you want to become an administrator for SS14?
I want to give back to the community, and help curate the game experience that I want to play.
At time of writing this, admin presence is really low, and I want this game to continue being as fun as it is, and admins are a vital part of that. I believe I would enjoy a lot of the tasks that fall under an admins duties, I also enjoy reading through and considering ban appeals, so would like to help address the backlog there as well.
How do you feel about the current roleplay status on the servers?
I am mostly a leviathan and occasional hopper player, and I think that these are at a relatively bare minimum level for lrp. A good few people are ‘people who work on a space station’, although there are a significant amount of people who are just shitters/nrp/self antags that really need to be addressed. I think this problem really depends on what role you play, considering you’ll see far more of this if you play more sec for instance, while if you play a role like bartender theres a better chance you’ll run into some passable RP.
Other than banning problematic players, what admin actions do you believe have the biggest positive impact?
Providing rules clarifications and game advice, both via ahelps and #admin-questions on the discord. Whilst it would be great if everyone actually read all the rules, this at least helps mitigate good faith players breaking rules they genuinely do not know about, and also allows for a smoother experience with people trying out new jobs or interacting with unfamiliar mechanics. I think events also have a positive impact when used in moderation, as they can really spice things up for entrenched players.
Have you ever had a negative experience in the game or with a game admin? If so what, if anything, would you do to prevent other players from experiencing this?
I have never had a negative experience with a game admin, although I have had some shifts that were quite frustrating due to other players, especially sec shifts, generally when there’s a lot of people who have been arrested causing issues at once. This generally leads to an overwhelming and frustrating experience. To help prevent this for other people I would ahelp non-antags who are causing issues in security, and either warn them to stop and/or ban them based on their history and degree of problems being caused. I wouldn’t do this during slower times, as some degree of this is expected for sec, and gives them things to do if there are no actual antags doing anything yet. Ultimately there is a fine line between an IC and admin issue, and I would draw that based mostly on how busy sec is at the time.
Have you ever had a good experience with the game or a game admin? If so, what was it?
Beyond just enjoying the game enough for ~300 hrs of playtime, I remember a fun shift where an admin spawned some CC officials at centcomm as ghostroles, and we spent like 20 minutes sending faxes and generally causing beuracracy for the station. It was a really fun roleplay time, and motivated me to actually unlock HoP
Scenario Questions
Scenario 1
It is the start of the round. There are 60 players on the server. The game mode is traitors, traitors have not been selected yet. There are three players who decided to observe the round instead of join it orbiting you. Two of them are encouraging you to “do something funny”.
Ignore them, and disappear for other players (assuming there was no preround mention of admin interference from an admin, or any other reason they may be expecting admin interactions). Seeing an aghost visibly often implies (in my experience at least) that they may be considering doing something interesting or running an event, as opposed to general adminning. I also wouldnt want to set a precedent that encouraging admins to interfere with rounds is a good idea/successful.
Assuming there was mention of admin interactions (e.g. a poll for an admeme that won) I would probably tell them to wait for the round to have some time to get going (of course assuming that the planned event wouldnt effect things from roundstart), and for preperations to be made. In this case I more likely wouldn’t disappear, as it can be fun watching admins set up things for later in the round.
Scenario 2
This scenario takes place on LRP. The Head of Security has decided to coup the Captain. The Head of Personnel agrees with the Head of Security and has taken up arms in case it is necessary to aid in effecting the arrest of the Captain. The Captain is hiding with the Quartermaster in the cargo shuttle to avoid the Clown who has stolen the captains saber as a non-antag. There are five people named in this scenario. Please describe what actions, if any, you would take in relation to each, and why.
HoS + HoP - This would depend massively on why they want to coup the captain. I would ahelp both of them and ask for their rationale. If it is just ‘for the lols’, or a similarly unconvincing reason, I would institute a temporary command roleban if they had no prior issues, or an appeal roleban if they had had prior issues of a similar nature. If there is a genuine reason for couping the captain, such as causing genuine harm to the station, and any remaining members of command agree (RD, CMO, CE have not been mentioned, QMs opinion has not been mentioned), there would be no further intervention required. If other members of command disagree, I would remind them that they are supposed to reach a consensus as command before starting a coup. If other command members are dead/incapacitated and the coup has a good reason, no further action would be needed, and would probably be very justified given the circumstance. My only other concern is why HoS has chosen to arm HoP, and not other members of security (assuming they are not all indisposed/dead), considering that, while HoS can choose to arm people, an arrest should ideally be being performed by security. I would ask HoS this in an ahelp, and remind them that they have their security team for a reason. If the coup is justified i would take no further action, especially if all other sec is unavailable. If not, it would contribute towards deciding the time for roleban.
QM - largely no action needs to be taken, I would ask QM if they have given their vote towards the coup as part of investigating the HoS+HoPs actions. Otherwise, it seems like they are following the orders of their superior (Cap), and is thus justified IC.
Cap - this also depends entirely on how justified the coup is. Getting to the point of a justified coup on the cap implies multiple significant failings on the caps part, such as gross negligence/incompetence or otherwise taking detrimental actions. Considering command is expected to be competent, I would likely impose a command roleban that is either temp or appeal depending on if they have a history of this sort of issue. If the cargo shuttle has left the station this is a bigger issue as command (generally except qm) is expected to remain on station throughout the round, and hiding from a clown is not a reasonable justification for leaving, considering the captain should have multiple tools to take them down (disabler, laser pistol). I would ahelp the captain and ask why they are hiding as opposed to working to reclaim their sword. If the coup is obviously justified I would not ask them about it, as they may not be aware of it. If the coup is not justified I would not place any bans, although if they are off station I would remind them of commands expectations to stay on station
Clown - If the round is already chaotic (which with the coup occuring it may well be) I would just ban them for self antagging. The saber is a high value item, and the fact that cap and qm feel the need to hide from them implies they may be using it. The duration of the ban would depend on both how many other issues the clown caused that round, and if they have a history in notes of causing issues. If they do, it would likely be appeal, if not, a temp. If the round is otherwise quiet, it would depend on if the clown had kept selfantagging further. If they just stole the saber and did not attack anyone, I would warn them that stealing high value command items is well outside of what is considered acceptable for a non-antag clown, and is definetly self antagging. If they were using it, or causing other self antag issues outside of whats expected from a clown, i would proceed with banning as above.
Scenario 3
You are ahelping a player about an issue. The player has no prior noted issues. A few days earlier, an admin had told you that this type of situation should result in a temporary ban for a first offense, and you are confident that this situation is not substantially different from the type that admin was describing. During the ahelp, another admin pings you on Discord with a link to the ongoing ahelp and tells you to just indefinitely ban them and make them appeal. Excluding trialmins and headmins, all admins are equally “ranked”. A headmin is not currently available.
This largely depends on what rule is being broken. if the rule being broken is one of the zero tolerance rules (or any other rule that typically should result in a first offence indefinite ban) I would appeal ban them, as that is also the recommended response on a first offence. Assuming it is not one of those issues, I would ask the admin pinging me why they believe it should be indefinite, considering that would likely be against banning guidelines. If the advise I was previously given conforms to banning guidelines for the given issue I would be more inclined to follow that, unless the other admin gives very good reasoning or information I overlooked. Worst case, applying a temp ban could be amended to an appeal ban if necessary after the fact, if there is very good reasoning given.
