Made ninja mask have a build in voice mask feature

My main concern is that ninja already has a high amount of stealth tools. Giving them additional deception stuff might make them even more disruptive and impossible to catch than they already are, which obviously isn’t ideal for a midround antag.

I’d like to hear more discussion about why this is wanted though. Maybe we could have ninja loadouts or something in the future.

My reasoning was:

1.) It makes sense for ninjas to have this IC
2.) It sounds fun and could allow for interesting plays.

I am not good with balance so I don’t know if that’ll make them too strong, but it seems pretty minor :person_shrugging:

Just basically going to copy paste what I put on the PR.

I don’t enjoy powercreeping the ninja. As an antagonist it’s already too strong.

I play Sec quite a bit, and when ninja gets confirmed all I can do is groan and hope they are brand new to the role, otherwise you cannot catch them.

It’s metagaming to know their objectives. They are practically invisible 24/7. They are fast as fuck. They can teleport. They have a point-and-click stun that you can use on repeat to stun a target forever. Their sword has a chance to reflect bullets.

Basically the one way to combat a decent ninja is to listen to comms and try to collapse on their location. This just removed that tiny bit of counterplay the ninja has.

As far as midround antags go, I think ninja is by far the worst when it comes to making the round more fun. This let’s the ninja troll a bit more, but Security should have ways of dealing with antagonists and this removes one of the only ways to deal with ninja.

I do understand the intent behind this change, but would prefer to see it packaged with a host of other changes to pivot Ninja into a stealthy/trickster antag with a much less OP kit. As it stands now, the Ninja is too good at too much with little counterplay.

Already said this on the PR, but just repeating it for sakes here.

People generally aren’t aware of how powerful the Ninja is, as the skill curve is very polarized to the left and right. A very powerful ninja can pretty much evade Security until the end of time, pretty much the only reason why a Ninja would ever die is because they made a mistake.[1]

I do agree it is a pretty minor change, though I would much prefer the Ninja be more tuned towards a nonlethal saboteur. Rightnow they’re just a murderboning machine and it doesn’t lead much to interesting roleplay other than “welp guess I got round removed)”.

  1. Not positioning themselves correctly, suit battery running out, sword on cooldown, etc. ↩︎

As the creator of this Pr, I may be a bit biased but I will share my opinions. PicklOH pointed out that the only way to catch a ninja is to listen to comms. This is a terrible reason for security and the ninja. I do agree that the ninja is overpowered in some aspects, and should be more balanced towards non-lethal antag. But the ninja, against a group of armed security officers, stand no chance. We should probably balance the ninja some time to ensure that they don’t just murderbone everyone in sight. But this PR is to give the ninja a niche stealth ability, not to balance the entire antagonist. Another reason is I’d like some customization with the ninja, the names its given are good, but I’d also like the voice to mask the ID. Thats my thoughts, but it’s really up to discussion.

Honestly I support it. Just for the silly factor of being able to make my ninja “Samurai Jack”

I don’t think Ninja needs another buff and they definitely don’t need another action button on their hotbar. Personally I think stuff like the voice mask should be kept to Syndies/Thieves and if we ever give it to a ghostrole antagonist it should be something like a Listening Post Operator, not just slapped onto an existing antag with a bunch of extra and conflicting features (Did you know Ninja gloves are also thieving gloves, by the way?)

I think that would be a lot more fun!

I’m okay with giving them a voice mask but ninja as a whole needs to be re-examined - I don’t like the fact they’re super nimble and can hide in space.

I think that “ninja feature creep” is indeed a problem, but it’s not a problem with the voice mask - it’s the problem with the rest of the ninja kit. The main example is teleport - it’s effectively a free get-out-of-jail card; however, that doesn’t really relate to the PR in question.
