This PR makes it so Vox are able to use the full color range for the body.
The concern stems from the fact that Vox initially were added with the lore implication of bioengineered species and as such the limitation of color was an intended feature meant to make it more unique.
My current stance on this is that opening up the full pallet to Vox removes a neat feature and distinction from Vox. I believe that we should rather focus on markings and hair styles, though I can also see that a small expansion of the pallet Vox can use opens up a lot more customization while still preserving the uniqueness of Vox.

Iâm not entirely opposed to expanding character customization options but i think that at a minimum they need to not be roundstart accessible. A grounded aesthetic is highlighted in the art docs as one of the key components of our art style and I think that some limitation of roundstart characters is ultimately necessary to keep that.
However, I wouldnât be opposed to things like facepaint or feather/scale dyes that let people switch around their appearance during a round. I think thatâs a lot more interesting and preserves a lot of the baseline visual style while still letting there be more chaos during the round, which mirrors our roundflow.
This PR really needs some screenshots showing what the color pallet change is doing. It is not possible to make an informed decision without that or trying it out yourself.
I think its a neat Idea, color often expressâs things about the characters personality, weather your dying your hair or feathers. but I do agree with the others given its a visual update we should have some visual refrences.
Yeah, the other species do not have any restrictions on color. Stuff like the lizard tail and moth wings are also markings that are not properly checked. Same with marking positions.
This means that anyone can export their character, change the YML to something you couldnât actually do ingame, and import it and the server will accept it.
Some stuff like colors are properly validated but some markings arenât.
If this lizard was lurking in the maints.. I would be frightened for my life. But yeah I still think we can explain it away with they dye there feathers or decend from more tropical birds iâll highlight the Nicobar pigeon as an example ;
I think the color limitation does add some noticeable cohesion to Voxes. Overall they come across as more grungy which fits in with SS14âs aesthetic. Were we to have some actual established lore I feel like it would be easier to cling on to that. Also, if thereâs a desire to have flair, the hair and beards provide that.
On the other hand I do remember feeling frustrated at the limited pallette available back when I started out playing around with the Vox character creator.
There is an argument to be made that humans/dwarves also have a limited color palette by being set to realistic skin tones. We donât have an authority on what is ârealisticâ for Vox, so either we get that set, or we open it up.
If we were to open up the Vox palette it might be a good idea to at least limit the most extreme RGB values (and do it for the other species while weâre at it) just to avoid the most garish colors.
Hues are unlocked on the Saturation but have a lower bound set for lightness that kicks in when a user saves their character. I have another PR active for making the customization validate inputs for Hues character types as it never did this previously (and further adds a lower bound to saturation)
As for this case: âNot-Unlocked-Yetâ is using markings (bandages colored 0,0,0) to achieve this look.
Iâve spent some time exploring the limitations of this: Largely the only modifications one can do is modifying the order outside of the allowed Categories (so floating head Category above overlay) and modifying the provided RGBA values.
It is still validated against allowed number of Markings per category as well as Species, So a moth cannot have a lizard tail, and a lizard cant acquire wings.
I fully agree with this sentiment about them being grungy. The range of hues available previously is already larger than what SS13 servers had (to my knowledge), and seems quite wide at that.
I actually do rather like that at least vox (and humans, I suppose) are not completely unfettered with their color options and maintain a sliver of âplausibilityâ. Ironic that itâs only the least and most alien species that does it.
I think this was the original demo lineup I made, where I reproduced in-engine the exact vox colors I was given as a sample from 13. So these are the options they have (as far as I know)
Instead, we can pick any point from within the hue range that this defines.
If people want colorful birds then perhaps a different species could be introduced for that, because vox are neither birds nor that colorful*, and I do not see why the existing design should be changed to accomodate those who want something different
(Although I think it would be very disingenuous to call this above pallette âboringâ. And this is without hair (and eyes), which CAN be any hue, so it can make for some very striking contrasts.)
