They’ve been added in for a long time and have barely any use. Ripley has had a broken attack for a while now even. (no damage/kicks in completely opposite direction, i dont fucking know honestly). It can’t:
-pry open doors/use unique mech tools (they’re bigger than borgs afterall)

  • protect you from physical harm (despite visually having glass and steel parts of somekind).
  • save you from spacings despite the cockpit being sealed

Mechs are honestly the biggest WYCI that I know of right now. I haven’t seen anyone working on fixing their many glaring issues, and last I heard I think their revamp was pending a vehicle code refactor? So, I don’t expect anyone to be fixing these any sooner.
