In-game Username: moomoobeef
Discord username: moomoobeef
Characters you play: Tom Carter
On average, how many hours do you expect to admin per week: ~14
Days you are available to admin on: any of them, but probably not all of them (I tend to play games in bursts throughout the week)
How old are you? 19
Do you have any SS14 experience outside of Wizard’s Den servers, or any SS13 experience? I have played a little bit of Frontier, and a little bit of RMC14. That’s it other than popping into ss13 a few times, not being able to figure out how to play, and leaving.
Do you have prior administration experience (SS13/SS14 experience preferred, please also post a way for us to verify this)? none
Have you ever been banned from any SS14 or SS13 servers? I think I was rolebanned from detective a looong time ago (near when I first started playing) but I can’t really remember for sure and I don’t see it in /adminremarks. Other than that, no bans.
What are you primarily interested in doing as an admin? probably in-game rule enforcement and events. Reviewing replays in response to reports after that. As well as rule enforcement I have an interest in reminding people about RP on salamander. As a player there I occasionally see people slipping up on RP and saying things they really shouldn’t and I think it’d be good just to remind folks. I’d probably spend most of my admin time aghosted and watching for rule or RP breaks. occasional events.
What are you least interested in doing as an admin? Not really that interested in handling ban appeals, I can’t really put my finger on it but I just don’t really like interacting through forums. Maybe because responses tend to be so slow my ADHD ass just gets distracted and I go do something else without even realizing it.
Detail Questions
What role do you think game admins serve on our servers?
Admins exist to protect the experience of the players, ensuring that rules are followed such that the game isn’t unduly unfair or unfun for the folks on the unfortunate end of said rule breakages. People make mistakes, especially new players, so it’s important to be lenient, but it’s also important never to give repeat offenders an opportunity to ruin rounds.
Why do you want to become an administrator for SS14?
Partially wanting to help out and make sure the game stays fun for new and old players, partially wanting to run events, and partially being bored of the roles I typically play but not bored of the game itself. Probably the first and last ones since events can be a lot of work, but I look forward to running some.
How do you feel about the current roleplay status on the servers?
Well I can really only speak to salamander since that’s the only place I’ve played with any regularity in the last several months, but I’d say it’s close, yet lacking. It’s hard to stay fully immersed when 25% or more of the crew seems to know every detail about every threat (because they do, and so does another 50%). Whenever I play dumb people almost seem to get fustrated. Most of the time though in regular play it’s pretty good, I have good interactions pretty much every shift. Whereas when I used to play on lizard you’d be lucky if you got anyone on the station to read a paper with more than two sentences, heads included.
Other than banning problematic players, what admin actions do you believe have the biggest positive impact?
Excluding banning, I’d say the most important positive things an admin can do is to help the players roleplay. Even outside of running events, just feeling heard after sending a fax or prayer or what have you can make a big impact on a players shift, and it can add a great deal to the round and to the roleplay they’re engaging in.
Have you ever had a negative experience in the game or with a game admin? If so what, if anything, would you do to prevent other players from experiencing this?
I’ve never had negative experiences with any of the admins, I’ve only had a few interactions with them in the first place, and they were all pretty nice. I have had bad experiences in the game, I don’t have the greatest memory but the one that stands out was this time when I became a chemist and the other (existing) chemist tried to kill me because they didn’t want a co-worker. As an admin I’d have definitely let this guy know that isn’t okay, and depending on his response give him a roleban for chem for a couple days.
Have you ever had a good experience with the game or a game admin? If so, what was it?
I got to be a centcom official once after I faxed a resume to centcom, repo ran the event and it went on to be probably the most memorable round I’ve ever had. It was also coincidentally my first survival round so it was certainly chaotic, but in a very fun way.
Scenario Questions
Scenario 1
It is the start of the round. There are 60 players on the server. The game mode is traitors, traitors have not been selected yet. There are three players who decided to observe the round instead of join it orbiting you. Two of them are encouraging you to “do something funny”.
“:P” proceed to ignore them and do whatever it is I was already doing. They’d probably get bored after being ignored for awhile, if they keep on after 5-10 minutes or if they are repeatedly suggesting I do something that in particular would be detrimental to the round, politely but firmly ask them to stop. if theres a way to hide my ghost or force them to stop orbiting (I don’t know if theres a way to do that) I’d probably do that afterward. If they persist even still I’m honestly not sure what I’d do, it really sort of depends on what I can do. If I can gag them for a couple minutes probably that. I really feel like a ban is harsh for that but if they keep doing it 30 minutes after the first warning I’d definitely have to give them a temporary ban. probably just a couple days.
Scenario 2
This scenario takes place on LRP. The Head of Security has decided to coup the Captain. The Head of Personnel agrees with the Head of Security and has taken up arms in case it is necessary to aid in effecting the arrest of the Captain. The Captain is hiding with the Quartermaster in the cargo shuttle to avoid the Clown who has stolen the captains saber as a non-antag. There are five people named in this scenario. Please describe what actions, if any, you would take in relation to each, and why.
inform the HoS and the HoP that you can’t rebel against the captain. Commands fighting eachother isn’t really fun for the rest of the players (on lizard potentially more than 70 other people) and it leads to poor responses when actual antags start doing their thing. If antags don’t have a strong command to challenge them then it’s not really as fun either. If they don’t comply, inform them that they will receive a command roleban for a week and a note, then send a deathsquad/ERT to execute them in specific. (or just smite them instead of deathsquad depending on how armed/hidden they are)
For the clown, inform them that they cannot steal the captains property as a non-antag, and ask them to peacefully return it either to the captain directly or to security. If they don’t comply probably just smite them and a short (2-3 days) roleban on clown.
inform captain and quartermaster that they can go back to playing as normal, also ask them not to hide on the shuttle in the future because regardless of scenario that can stall the round and can also make cargo’s job hard/impossible which isn’t fun for cargo or departments which depend on it.
Scenario 3
You are ahelping a player about an issue. The player has no prior noted issues. A few days earlier, an admin had told you that this type of situation should result in a temporary ban for a first offense, and you are confident that this situation is not substantially different from the type that admin was describing. During the ahelp, another admin pings you on Discord with a link to the ongoing ahelp and tells you to just indefinitely ban them and make them appeal. Excluding trialmins and headmins, all admins are equally “ranked”. A headmin is not currently available.
well if two equally ranked admins have conflicting answers on what to do in the situation, and no headmin is available, then it’s up to me to pick which one. I’d do a quick look to see if any of the rule clarifications are relevant, and if so take that into account, if not then use my own discretion based on the offense in particular and how it effects other players to pick between a temp ban or a permanent appealable ban.
