New Job Idea: Broker

Here is a rough outline.

So, the Broker would have a small office with a door, an automatic windows, a chair, and a Computer Console.

People would bring their money to the Broker and hand them their money through the window.

The Broker would then insert the money into the Investing Computer Console.

There (Kind of Like Writing a name on the Caro Order Computer) the Broker will invest the money under his client’s name on behalf of his client.

The Investing Computer Console allows the Broker to invest money (his own and other peoples’) on the Space Market.

The Space Market has a variety of Space Stocks and Space Crypto Currencies that the Broker can invest in and monitor the performance of on the Console.

Throughout the shift, the value of these Stocks and Crypto Currencies will shift.

When the Broker Sales the Investment, the money poops out into a little envelop with the corresponding Account Name on it. That way the Broker can keep track of which envelope of money is going to which client.

The job of the Broker is to raise money for himself / his clients / the station throughout his shift. While also trying his best not to loose everyone’s money on bad investments.

i did not understand half of what you just typed out but from the part that i was able to figure out this sounds entertaining for tiders and bored command members

The basic idea would be to simulate trading on the market.

So, like, maybe Clown would get some Spesos from the bar and bring them to the Broker. The Broker could then deposit them into an ‘Account’ on the Console named Clown or the Clown’s Character Name or whatever the Broker types in the Account Name Field.

The Broker would then choose an investment on behalf of the Clown. Or, perhaps if the Clown knows the market, the Clown could suggest an investment.

The Space Market would have several name listings for Space Stocks and Space Crypto Currencies that the Broker could invest the Spesos into.

The Server would randomly assign different ups and downs to the different financial instruments. That way a stock performs differently every shift (as to not get boring by having Broker think ‘Fill in the Blank Stock name is a good stock’ every single shift. Perhaps some sort of algorithm to simulate different movements. Crypto Currencies would have more volatile movement, so as to simulate how they could make or loos the investor a lot of money at once. Where as stocks would have some volatile stocks and some not volatile stocks.

Not sure how in depth people would like to go with the interface. The interface could just show the current price of each financial instrument as a bare minimum. But, if someone wanted to get fancy, they could add bar charts and stuff like with a Brokerage App.

So, back to the example. Maybe Broker places 50 Spesos on ‘Amalgamated Inter-Space Breathe Mask Manufactures’ at 20 Spesos a share. This means he just purchased 2.5 shares for the Clown. Clown leaves and comes back about five minutes later to check on his investments. Broker has good news. Sense the stock rose in that time to 30 Spesos a share, Clown’s investment is now worth 75 Spesos.

You get the idea.

Ah thanks for the explanation

I think it would be fun.

It could also be a practical way to raise more money for the station. Maybe Cargo is short on funds and decides to take what they have to the Broker and the Broker ends up making them a lot on a good stock or crypto.

insider trading by investing in internals based stocks before plasmaloose

That was funny. But, actually, that’s not a bad feature idea. If someone could program the feature to react to situations on the station that would be a cool idea. So, like, if plasmaloose happens maybe make that stock go up as a result. That would be harder to program, but it would make the Broker job that much more interactive to have fine touches like that.

Maybe invest in Mind Shield Manufacturing if it looks like it might be a Rev Round. Then have the price go up over time if it is a Rev Round but go down over time if it isn’t. That way if people guess correctly with the information they get through chat they could win big on correctly predicting Rev Round.

shits and giggles till the station goes poor at the worse timing

Probably the job would be held at a higher standard though, since the person would be handling your money…

See, you’re getting it.

It would be a fun role for someone to play. It could add a new practical element to financing departments of the ship. And it could add extra, dynamic, drama to the station as well. I think all three of these elements are important things for new jobs to be able to do.

You could imagine the Broker coming in to save the day if a department is low on funds and invests well and gets some good money for the station.

But, you could also imagine a fair amount of drama if that situation backfires and the Broker ends up loosing the department everything if the investment falls apart.

Sense the financial instruments would be programmed to imitate the actual markets (though at a quicker speed to keep up with how fast paced the game can be) the Broker could try a few things.

The Broker could try investing in a ‘slow and steady’ stock that makes a little profit over a long period of time. Or, the Broker could try to invest in a stock that has been showing higher fluctuation; hoping to buy in on a downturn and turn over once the stock picks up.

The whole idea would be to bring the fun of investing to a job role on Space Station 14.

I’m not a programmer, but I wouldn’t imagine this would be the hardest thing to make. At least in a simple form to start out with.

I have just tried Frontier Station and they already have a Space ATM where you can deposit and withdraw Spesos from. They also have vending machines that charge money. I honestly don’t know why vanilla SS14 doesn’t make more use of the Spesos like this and have a more detailed, actual, Station economy already.

So, the Computer Investing Console would essentially function like Frontier’s Space ATM. The main differences is instead of just having your own account you could deposit money into multiple accounts that you can type in a label for. (That way you could label them in a way that makes most sense. For either a department or individual people.) Instead of the Spesos just sitting there collecting dust; you could tie them to purchases of Space Stocks and Space Crypto. All these would be creative, fun names that would mimic Stocks and Crypto Currencies. Each of these would be tied to an algorithm that would simulate realistic price movements. (Just sped up for Station Time. So, instead of having to wait a 24-48 hours for an interesting movement, you’d just wait like 5 or 10 minutes.) Then you could sell back the Stocks and Crypto and make the profit or loss in Spesos. I think out of everything, a decent algorithm to handle these price movements would be the most difficult thing to program. Though, not that hard though. But, again, I’m not a programmer.

This idea came to me because I recently got into Stock and Crypto investing on my app and have been having fun with it. This got me to thinking, this would be cool to recreate in SS14 as a new job. I think it would have a lot more effect on the station if vanilla SS14 had more of an economy like Frontier Station has. But, even with what is in SS14 right now it would still matter.

Why doesn’t SS14 do more with Spesos? They’re kind of just there and you can’t really do a whole lot with them right now. In SS14 the Vending Machines are free, the Beer is free, almost everything is free. It makes Spesos a lot less useful than they could be if everything were priced like Frontier Station does.

I guess I can agree with the fact Spesos don’t have much use besides buying stuff for the Station. Using Frontier’s money system though I’m not exactly sure about myself.

I mean, I kinda enjoy the free vending machine stuff and Space Cola, though MAYBE for the Bartender it would be actually nice to make money by serving people and they give you the spesos for the drink. It would kinda actually be cool to do this type of thing.

The Broker job also would probably be a non-syndicate job, since they can literally throw your funds down with ease probably.

The investing part sounds pretty nice though. Way to make money through chance and good thinking or probably get fired for it because you lost most of the funds and haven’t made a single good choice lol. MRP might even be a good job for it to be in or LRP. Probably both too.
