Detail Questions

What role do you think game admins serve on our servers?

Game admins enforce game and role-play rules

Why do you want to become an administrator for SS14?

I want to learn how to deal with game and role-play rule enforcement. I currently only deal with anti-raider enforcement and it would be great to learn how to deal with other enforcement issues instead of seeing ahelps or behavior that I can’t yet deal with.

I also want to better understand admin needs to be in a position to help make better tooling.

How do you feel about the current roleplay status on the servers?

I feel that players don’t have similar expectations on what different levels of role play entail.

Other than banning problematic players, what admin actions do you believe have the biggest positive impact?

I think it is best to communicate and set expectations via ahelp messages first.

Have you ever had a negative experience in the game or with a game admin? If so what, if anything, would you do to prevent other players from experiencing this?

No

Have you ever had a good experience with the game or a game admin? If so, what was it?

I was playing a security officer and saw a case where a security officer acting outside their authority (executing people, shooting weapons, and generally being s***). I ahelped the behavior and an admin promptly replied indicating that they were looking into the matter. At round end, it turned out that the “security officer” was actually an antag. This admin provided prompt assurance that matters are being dealt with without spoiling meta-knowledge.

Scenario Questions

Scenario 1

It is the start of the round. There are 60 players on the server. The game mode is traitors, traitors have not been selected yet. There are three players who decided to observe the round instead of join it orbiting you. Two of them are encouraging you to “do something funny”.

Ignore them. Near round start, it is probably more important to check for round-start (self-)antag behavior, skim the list of usernames, and look for antag-rolling behavior.

Scenario 2

This scenario takes place on LRP. The Head of Security has decided to coup the Captain. The Head of Personnel agrees with the Head of Security and has taken up arms in case it is necessary to aid in effecting the arrest of the Captain. The Captain is hiding with the Quartermaster in the cargo shuttle to avoid the Clown who has stolen the captains saber as a non-antag. There are five people named in this scenario. Please describe what actions, if any, you would take in relation to each, and why.

This is quite a situation. Most likely I would try to consult a more experienced admin if they are available for help in resolving the situation. Assuming that nobody else is available:

Captain coups may occasionally be justified if the situation demands it, e.g. if the captain has been behaving in especially unreasonable ways, particularly if multiple heads agree. In this situation it is probably important to understand why this coup is proceeding against the captain. If there are searchable admin logs that would clarify the events leading up to this, that would help provide context to justify if this coup was reasonable or not.

Assuming that admin tools still leave much to be desired, I would most likely ahelp all of the involved parties to ask what’s going on and why the captain is being arrested to hear all of their stories. That would probably go faster than log diving.

Captain: It seems like the other heads are trying to arrest you. Could you please explain what’s going on?

HoP/HoS: It looks like you’re trying to arrest the captain. Could you please explain what’s going on?

Clown: Why did you steal the captain’s saber? (the clown is likely self-antagging here, but if they are responsive in ahelp I would probably just give them a warning)

The quartermaster doesn’t seem like they are involved, but it would be worth asking them what’s going on with the captain for a better picture.

Depending on what I determine and the likelihood based on ahelp logs, I would probably give a CentCom announcement about whether or not the captain is still captain or not and let the players deal with it IC. If it does turn out that the captain was being especially egregious, it would be accompanied with a note and possibly role ban.

Scenario 3

You are ahelping a player about an issue. The player has no prior noted issues. A few days earlier, an admin had told you that this type of situation should result in a temporary ban for a first offense, and you are confident that this situation is not substantially different from the type that admin was describing. During the ahelp, another admin pings you on Discord with a link to the ongoing ahelp and tells you to just indefinitely ban them and make them appeal. Excluding trialmins and headmins, all admins are equally “ranked”. A headmin is not currently available.

It depends on the seriousness of the issue. If this is clearly “raider” behavior or highly egregious behavior like using slurs or inappropriate names, I would likely give them an appeal-only ban given the advice from the other admin online.

For other game rules, I would err on the side of shorter temporary bans for a first offense.

I’m withdrawing my admin application because life things have happened and I won’t have enough time to dedicate to this. Thanks for your consideration.
