Detail Questions
What role do you think game admins serve on our servers?
Admins enforce rules and supplement game experience, they can supplement the game by helping new players find their way around, fixing game-breaking bugs, or running in-game events. these events can span anywhere from all admins planning a 24-hour server, to one admin spawning a loaf of bread in response to a prayer.
Why do you want to become an administrator for SS14?
i love this game with a passion, even when i’m just observing which i do at a around a 3:1 ratio compared to playing as my character. i want to help all players have better experiences, especially new and uninformed players and i want to give quick meaningful service at all times, especially when there are no other admins online. I also want to be a larger part of the community.
How do you feel about the current roleplay status on the servers?
i play on leviathan and vulture, because i am US East. i like these servers, the only issue is the amount of SSD new people i see sitting on benches n stuff during high pop, as well as a lower standard of roleplay. i don’t think this is intentional malice, i think it’s just new players being new, and helping these players have a good first experience can lead them to really enjoying the game, and playing the game in a way that will allow them to have fun.
Other than banning problematic players, what admin actions do you believe have the biggest positive impact?
helping new players have a memorable experience and trying to help them learn how to play can introduce players to the game in a way that will have them be a good player and long term part of the community.
Have you ever had a negative experience in the game or with a game admin? If so what, if anything, would you do to prevent other players from experiencing this?
i have had negative experiences with players in the game such as raiders, or people generally being a nuissance. i have not had a negative experience with an admin except for the absence of an administrator.
Have you ever had a good experience with the game or a game admin? If so, what was it?
ive had mutliple good experiences with the game and game admins, i remember having many fun and good experiences as a new player though when i actually started understanding the game, such as being taught how science works, making my first borg and whatnot. the people i was talking to and the laughs i was having at the utter shenanigans that took place were extremely fun. i do believe i’ve had good experiences with a little admin intervention events as well.
Scenario Questions
Scenario 1
It is the start of the round. There are 60 players on the server. The game mode is traitors, traitors have not been selected yet. There are three players who decided to observe the round instead of join it orbiting you. Two of them are encouraging you to “do something funny”.
I probably won’t do anything, but if i feel it was polite i may do something that doesn’t actually affect the round. Maybe a ghost trick, give them a round-long cosmetic change, such as changing the color or giving ghost clothes.
Scenario 2
This scenario takes place on LRP. The Head of Security has decided to coup the Captain. The Head of Personnel agrees with the Head of Security and has taken up arms in case it is necessary to aid in effecting the arrest of the Captain. The Captain is hiding with the Quartermaster in the cargo shuttle to avoid the Clown who has stolen the captains saber as a non-antag. There are five people named in this scenario. Please describe what actions, if any, you would take in relation to each, and why.
My answer to this question depends on what the Captain has done.
If the captain has done nothing wrong, then the Head of Security would receive an Ahelp asking why they decided to coup the Captain, a warning, and potentially a job ban. The Head of Personnel has no reason to listen to the Head of Security other than personal interest, and it could be assumed that the HoP is only in it for the promotion they’d receive once the Captain was overthrown, i would Ahelp the HoP and talk to them about why they decided to go along with Head of Security, depending on what is said in the Ahelp and further investigation through a round replay, the HoP may receive a warning and/or job ban. The Quartermaster is abiding by the chain of command and giving the captain a safe place to hide from the self antag clown who stole the Captain’s saber, there would be no action taken against the Quartermaster. The Clown would be Ahelped and warned, i would ask why the clown stole the saber in the first place, and tell them not to do that again. i am noting the fact that the clown stole it in a way and for long enough that it caused the Captain to flee, this would result in a warning, even if the clown was compliant with security after the fact and wrote it off as a joke, if the clown was not compliant it would result in a temporary ban.
If what the Captain has done is coup-able in character, but doesn’t actually break any rules, the Head of Security would not have any action taken against them, depending on the level to which the Head of Personnel armed, where the arms was taken from, (level III bulletproof vest and Drozd from sec vs disabler SMG from sec vs Magnum from vault or fireaxe from bridge) and how guided the Head of Personnel was when arming (like if HoS handed level III bulletproof vest and Drozd from sec, it would result in a talk with HoS and maybe a warning for HoS because im unsure if that is all necessary), the HoP may receive an ahelp asking about the amount they armed and why they felt it to be necessary, potentially a warning as well. The Quartermaster is abiding by the chain of command and giving the captain a safe place to hide from the clown who stole the Captain’s saber, no action would be taken against the Quartermaster. The Clown would be Ahelped, in this scenario the clown could be participating in the coup but i would ask the clown what their motivations for stealing the captain’s saber are. if the clown has no idea of the coup, this would result in a warning, even if the clown was compliant with security after the fact and wrote it off as a joke. if the clown was fully aware of the coup and it made sense for the clown to participate, then as long as the clown did not keep the saber WITH MALICE (evading arrest, hiding it), the most i would do is ask the clown to stay within the confines of their job. attempting to become captain while there is an active coup absolutely is within the confines of their job.
However if the Captain has broken a rule, depending on what that is, i will Ahelp the captain eventually if it is severe, there is no scenario where the captain would be artificially round removed at this point as to not disrupt the flow of the game (because, at this point roleplay has gone too far, if they were RDMing crew or something, it seems like the roleplay is already giving them in-character consequences on top of what i will be giving them after the shift is over, if it was crew RDM i would assist in the revival of crew members who were wrongfully slain) but they WILL get a warning, and probably some type of job ban or ban depending on what they did wrong. Nothing will happen to the Head of Security, the Captain potentially acting in a violent way would also justify the HoP’s decision to arm. If neither of them Ahelped the situation, i would Ahelp them and let them know they should Ahelp this in the future. The Quartermaster is simply abiding by the chain of command, potentially threatened by the captain, nothing would happen to the Quartermaster. Depending on the Clown’s involvement with the Captain’s rulebreaks and if they have Ahelped the situation, like if the clown was murdered by Captain or the Clown was completely unaware of the captain breaking rules, the clown might get an Ahelp asking for them to Ahelp in the future if the clown was a victim or retaliating against the captain breaking rules. If the clown had no idea the Captain was going rogue then the Clown would get a warning for stealing the captain’s sword and being self antagonistic. it is not a very funny joke, especially if the captain was in the middle of a fight, the clown would have had no idea if the captain was fighting someone dangerous or not.
in all 3 of these scenarios i would utilize round replays and logs to determine the objective truth of the situation.
Scenario 3
You are ahelping a player about an issue. The player has no prior noted issues. A few days earlier, an admin had told you that this type of situation should result in a temporary ban for a first offense, and you are confident that this situation is not substantially different from the type that admin was describing. During the ahelp, another admin pings you on Discord with a link to the ongoing ahelp and tells you to just indefinitely ban them and make them appeal. Excluding trialmins and headmins, all admins are equally “ranked”. A headmin is not currently available.
this player has no prior issues, another admin told me this scenario should result in a temporary ban for a first offense, this other admin telling me to indefinitely ban them and make them appeal could be referring to if this was a repeat issue, i would let the admin know that this was their first offense and that i was under the impression it should result in a temporary ban on first offense. i’d also ask why they think i should indef ban. while unlikely, the 2nd admin could have an issue with the player, and trying to use me as a middleman for their own reservations. i would consider the responses and i think that my judgement would lead me to give the player a temporary ban.
