I have been told, in essence that playing brigmedic is “metagaming” despite not breaking any rules as far as I have been told, and the reasons that I have been given are as follows, which I have attempted to dispute:
“I was speedrunning it” It takes me a half an hour to get everything as I have to run between departments gathering tools, materials and getting approval from department heads.
“I was neglecting my duty, thus breaking the abandoning job rule” I still did my job as a secoff.
“I take away content from departments” I interact with four separate departments over a 30 minute time period, wherein my help in medical before I finish getting all my things for brigmedic and after is greatly appreciated.
“You are not in a private miltary, therfore brigmedic is not needed” Security has automatic military-grade weaponry stored in safes, thus being very well prepared for an attack on the station if it were to happen (therfore taking the role as a “medic” for security is not out of the question and would be sensible) and also; Most stations have brigmedic rooms
Several people I know have suggested I take this problem to the fourms for a final, concrete consensus on the topic as I have made playing brigmedical my entire gimmick for the “salmander” ss14 server, and thus being not allowed to play it kinda ruins the entire game for me.
There was also a feature in ss13 wherein you took “responsibility” over a certain department as security to watch over it, and even had colored bands to show which department you were watching over so…being barred to play brigmedical feels very odd, especially on a MRP server.
Role Abandonment: Job Changes
This rule clarification attempts to clarify the “Do not abandon your role” rule. In the case of any conflict, the server rules take precedence.
In short, this has been ruled a non-issue for most situations. However details, context, and circumstances are key.
Joining a round as a passenger and immediately getting a job change is not a violation of this rule. The same is true for changing to hybrid roles that have some overlap with your current role, like to brig medic from doctor or security officer. Joining a round with the intention of getting one of these permitted job changes and then refusing to perform your shift start role if your request is denied is a violation of this rule.
The Head of Personnel, Acting Captain, or Head of Staff of the department you’re going into can give you a job change. If you are changing to a hybrid role that overlaps your current role, your department head can approve the job change, but without a proper job change this is not sufficient permission to take things from other departments that you would otherwise not be able to take as a non-antagonist.
Any conflicts caused by job changes being approved without communicating with relevant departments are not the fault of the player requesting the job change. Players should attempt to resolve these conflicts in-character, but they may rise to a rule issue in certain circumstances.
You cannot prepare for the job change in ways that would otherwise be considered self-antagging. For example, you cannot start hoarding supplies from your department that you would need for some hypothetical hybrid role before being given the hybrid role. Even after being given the hybrid role, hoarding supplies from your department may violate another rule, particularly if it was not clear to the person who approved the role change that you would take the actions you did.
Personal Suggestions
These aren’t rule binding whatsoever, just my own personal takes to minimize possible improper assumptions and conflict.
Don’t be annoying if you get denied. Simple as that, the heads of staff reserve the right to hire people into their departments however they please, so if they’re not convinced there’s a reason for it, just accept it and move on with your shift. That means don’t make it your entire gimmick either, you should be able to continue the round without it.
I would heavily advise that you go from medical doctor to brig medic, and not security officer to brig medic. It can be easily seen as abusing the fact that security officers can not be antagonists if you only ever do this as a security officer. It also may promote more interesting restrictions to your job and promote more in-depth roleplay situations.
