so i logged onto wizden servers with a vpn and i got this message
so im requesting a whitelist for using a vpn cause i live on the opposite side of the world from the wizden servers and the lag is just ungodly, kindly accept this request.
so i logged onto wizden servers with a vpn and i got this message
I just want to mention… this is not how vpns work. You will lag the same amount
wait what?
Also this should be an admin message
sorry about that, but how will it not change my lag?
VPNs work by making you connect to someone else that relays that traffic and then back at you.
This will actually add MORE lag in most cases or keep it the same
well, im aware of the structure of vpn’s working but in my case, since it would reduce the number of relays between the game server and me it would probably result in a imporved experiance, also the lag i face is not 60ms… its usually around 350-400ms on a good day
60ms was an example for my picture.
A vpn does not magically make you get closer to the game server. This is not how the internet works. The same distance will be traveled (and perhaps even add lag since the vpn has to decrypt and find out where to send the traffic) and then travel that same distance back at you.
You may try to get a vpn exemption (I am not the one to grant them, admins are. I linked you to how to make an admin message above) but this feels like you are experiencing a placebo effect in actuality. (or is very little to do any meaningful effect)
well, i mean shouldnt it depend on the vpn connection itself weather its short or long (goes through many relays), not to mention given the kind of isp i have, its probably going to improve the ping, no joke the ping really goes down while using a vpn to browse the internet funnily enough.
im just gonna try to see if using a vpn will solve my lag, thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Ryan, Brudda…
I’m an IT Network Engineer in real life. There is no scenario at all where a VPN would be faster than a straight up direct connection. The only way you’d maybe get more speed out of a VPN is if the server you were connecting to were throttling your IP address or something like that. But normally only the big players do that.
I would eat my boots after a walk through a pig pen in the rain if SS14 was throttling any regions.
Alright well asterisk
It COULD help, if your ISP takes a bad route to the final server a vpn may “force” a better route.
Although it’s usually not too much in most cases. And not a reason for us to provide an exception sadly.
just adding it also could be faster if the ISP throttled the connection to Wizden for some reason. but I don’t see that as likely.
