Detail Questions
What role do you think game admins serve on our servers?
Keeping the server enjoyable for players by enforcing roleplay rules in a way that does not alter the immersion or experience of other players.
Why do you want to become an administrator for SS14?
SS14 for me is the perfect game, with a great community I’d love to give back to. Whilst I dont have the coding expertise required to expand the project, I believe I can use the administrative and community management experience I have to hopefully make the game a bit more enjoyable and immersive for all players by resolving situations that happen inside and outside of the game.
How do you feel about the current roleplay status on the servers?
LRP - Not bad, and you still have a lot of opportunities to have good roleplay experiences. However, there is still a lot of rulebreaking - oftentimes if you’re looking for it, you’ll see one or multiple instances per round.
MRP - Often very good. I’ve played lots of characters and had multiple immersive RP experiences, and only witnessed very few rulebreaking events. When rulebreaking occurs its mostly very minor, you rarely get self-antagging or other rulebreaks.
Other than banning problematic players, what admin actions do you believe have the biggest positive impact?
Helping newer players who ask on ahelp and healing the damage done by raiders or other problematic players to ensure everyone’s experience isn’t harmed.
Have you ever had a negative experience in the game or with a game admin? If so what, if anything, would you do to prevent other players from experiencing this?
Since I’ve had few interactions with the admins especially since I started, I don’t think so - although I have ahelped a problem without a response before, which is solvable through either better communication to inform players when a problem is fixed or more admin activity.
Have you ever had a good experience with the game or a game admin? If so, what was it?
When I was brand new to the game, I ended up self antagging without really realising it was against the rules or the impact of what I was doing. An admin messaged me, explained the situation, and let me off with a warning and made me reread the rules again without a major punishment. As I was new, a long ban probably would have stopped me playing the game forever, so I am very grateful that the admin went with the educational approach as I’m still here a year later.
Scenario Questions
Scenario 1
It is the start of the round. There are 60 players on the server. The game mode is traitors, traitors have not been selected yet. There are three players who decided to observe the round instead of join it orbiting you. Two of them are encouraging you to “do something funny”.
If I had no other priorities, I would probably do something simple with no effect on the round at play or any of the players inside it - maybe ask if they want to be spawned far far away in two pirate ships to blast each other with cannons (ghosting them after one wins, of course), or make a small arena for them to try and banana pie each other in.
Scenario 2
This scenario takes place on LRP. The Head of Security has decided to coup the Captain. The Head of Personnel agrees with the Head of Security and has taken up arms in case it is necessary to aid in effecting the arrest of the Captain. The Captain is hiding with the Quartermaster in the cargo shuttle to avoid the Clown who has stolen the captains saber as a non-antag. There are five people named in this scenario. Please describe what actions, if any, you would take in relation to each, and why.
My initial action would be to investigate the context of the situation, as this scenario can have many causes ranging from legitimate reason to purely malicious intent. I will provide my actions based on a range of possible contexts.
The Head of Security - Most likely has a poor reason to try and coup the captain, as they are (assumedly) not an antagonist. As this is against roleplay rules for command, I would explain to them why this sets a bad example for other players & is harmful for the progression of the round in an admin message, ask them to stop the coup attempt immediately, and command roleban them for a short period of time. If the Head of Security did have a good reason to coup the captain, for example the captain making him arrest random people for his entertainment, trolling or setting an overall bad example for other players, then I would inform him of the correct way to go about the coup, and why the way he is currently doing could be harmful for the round’s progression and the overall image of command.
The Head of Personnel - Should the coup found to be unlawful and with malicious intent, they would be told to return their weapons and be made to reread the rules. Whilst their role in supporting the coup may warrant a roleban, it is very possible that they believe they have an RP reason for proceeding with it, or have misinterpreted the situation and believes all of command also agrees to the coup and have an admin’s permission to proceed, making me hesitant to provide a harsh punishment for them. Else, they would just be told to return their weapon, as the HOP most likely already has their disabler which is more than enough for a simple arrest.
The Clown - Would be messaged and told to return the captain’s saber and surrender himself to security in order to not break the immersion for other players involved. Unless the context of the situation makes me hesitant (i.e the Captain dared the clown to steal his saber, the Captain has been harassing the clown for no good reason the whole round, or it is evident that the Clown was playing a prank and is cooperative with returning the saber if asked), I would probably give the clown either a strong warning or even a short ban if they use the saber maliciously (i.e to self-antag) as well as a reread of the rules. If it was just a prank and they were cooperative, I would still give them a very light warning and make them aware that pranks of that caliber are treading the line between clowning and self-antag.
The Captain - Again, depends on the context of the situation. If the Captain has given no reason for the necessity of a coup, then no actions are needed, and I would let them roleplay the situation out. However, if the Captain is being a poor captain and causing problems that set a bad example for command staff (for example what I mentioned earlier regarding the reasons the HoS may want to initiate a coup), then a strong warning and potentially a command roleban may be in order depending on the severity of the Captain’s actions.
The Quartermaster - Unless the Quartermaster somehow has a big part in this situation, its likely no action will need to be taken, as they simply sheltered the captain when he asked.
Scenario 3
You are ahelping a player about an issue. The player has no prior noted issues. A few days earlier, an admin had told you that this type of situation should result in a temporary ban for a first offense, and you are confident that this situation is not substantially different from the type that admin was describing. During the ahelp, another admin pings you on Discord with a link to the ongoing ahelp and tells you to just indefinitely ban them and make them appeal. Excluding trialmins and headmins, all admins are equally “ranked”. A headmin is not currently available.
As a headmin is not available, in this situation I would opt for the lighter punishment and give a temporary ban. However, I would also message a headmin for clarification regarding on whether the ban should be indefinite or not, and up it to indefinite if necessary.
