Salvager simply doesn’t work. I’ve played 101 hours so far and I’ve only seen miners get ore three times, this is on both Wizden and Goobs.
My suggestion is split the two roles (Miners and Salvagers NEED to be separate, they attract completely different players).
Mining in SS13 was a mostly solitary and slow task, split between long stretches out in the mine then returning to relax before going ‘back down the shaft’.
Salvaging is cowboy-ish style, it’s closer to a chaotic looter shooter then anything mining is akin to.
They just should not be the same job, they don’t work the same and since it mostly attracts the Salvager type who immediately take the only shuttle it prevents departments from ever getting any mats they need.
I’d suggest making the Miners have a old set locations shuttle that FTLs between set locations and the Salvagers can keep the shuttle, that way Miners don’t have to jump blindly into space or spend ages trying to get a shuttle working since Salvagers always take it.

Salvage doesnt have a shuttle, unless you mean taking the cargo shuttle which they really arent meant to do.
Wreckage also gives good basic mats, dont need to just mine
To be honest that’s a good idea, but it has its cons like:
What if no one wants to be a miner, or what if everyone just wants to be the new Salvagers, but from my 472h I’ve played a good bit of Salvage [Maybe like 150h] and we would just always do as the QM said, either we do wrecks and ruins first or just mine a shitload, and then go off doing ruins. Of course we would get more mats if QM asked, that’s just how it is, so I wouldn’t call it busted, to me it still seems good, besides the new Xeno that has like 400hp and has those tentacles.
Another side note, the asteroid is the most perfect thing, because if you have a good set up like, a beacon at Cargo, you can just mine a lot, make a crate and send it back, then also go to the ruins, while keeping track of QM’s orders.

to add to this, this is also an issue with QM players. 9/10 times I play salv QM never interacts with us, and generally just leaves us to our own devices, while being cargo tech with an office/gambling addict

FOR REAL, like when I play QM the first thing I do is kick the clown and tell salv to get me mats, then tell them they can go ruins or whatever, QM’s need to interact with salv constantly, QM is their boss and he needs to keep tabs on them, I’ve seen QM’s die because they didn’t keep tabs on salv. One time salvage had one or two syndies, QM didn’t check on them, they bought a surplus and flew with their shuttle, then captain intervened, checked on salv, and almost died.

Honestly, when i’m QM I generally tell salv that as long as I have mats I normally dont care except for bounties. But most interaction is just
salv: QM can I buy jetpacks
qm: whatever
40 minutes later
qm: still alive salv?
either ignored (no) or
salv: yea
qm: ok
That’s my argument.
Salvaging is fun for some players but adds literally nothing to SS14’s rounds.
If they were split (like how some SS13 servers have a ‘space explorer’) so instead there could still be the old SS13 mining class with the preset shuttle at least then it’d work.
Because currently they only seem to ‘work’ when they meta-game with a shuttle, put the magnet on the shuttle and just camp outside the spot were salvage appears. Especially since space is near un-navigable without a shuttle due to the weird space movement system.
I’ve thought for a while it’d be nice if there could be a dedicated Mining magnet and dedicated Salvage magnet, so that if one salvager disagrees with the other two about what they want to do, they can still do it solo.
Separating the roles entirely into mining or salvage seems like a better solution, since you’d know for sure what kind of “getting materials for the station” experience you’re getting.
It’d suck if no one wants to be a miner, but it’d also come with the positive of you know round start that someone needs to become a miner. You can say as QM “HoP, no one chose to mine, wanna put out a job announcement for any passengers who wanna go mining?”
People might late join as miner, but it’s nice to be able to say “There’s a job opening here, anyone want to do it,” compared to salvager now where having three salvagers doesn’t necessarily mean you have any mining enthusiasts.

It’s not that people don’t want to be miners, it’s just the position gets taken up by the cowboys.
I’ve had more then a few rounds where I’ve been called ‘boring’ for wanting to mine, only to find said cowboy salvager dead five seconds later.
I see what you are saying, but this still wont fix the issue of no mats, if cargo can’t get miners, they cant deliver mats to the station, of course sending out the announcement that cargo needs miners might get a few, but still its risky, id just keep doing my thing and ordering salvagers to get mats and if they don’t just fire and replace them, its not that difficult.
But I like the idea of two separate magnets one for ore and one for wrecks.
