Slooonzy - Permabanned for metacomms

Ban reason: metacommunication via discord
Length of ban: Indefinite
Events leading to the ban: When I play SS14, it is almost always with my friend, sweetasd. We both had similar names and were both in botany, and at the time we were talking on discord. We had both kind of zoned out and were not speaking in game much, which I think was where the main suspicion arose from. An admin messaged me and pointed out the name and job overlap and gave me a brief explanation of how metacommunication is a bannable offense, then I was promptly banned. I would provide more information if I could, but that’s all that happened.

Reason the ban should be removed: I understand that metacommunication can give people an unfair advantage over other players, however me and my friend weren’t even talking about the game, and if we did make any comments regarding the game, it was just pointing out stuff we could already see (we stayed in botany the entire round), and we weren’t in any way attempting to gain an edge over other players or gain influence over the round (which is what I assume the issue with metacommunication is). We were just making jokes with each other. I was also unaware that metacommucation was a bannable offence, and this is my first ban. I did not receive any kind of warning or chance to redeem myself, and I think that I should at least get the ban reduced to a temporary one. I will refrain from talking on discord while I’m playing in the future now that I have been banned.

Another issue I can see is how people should probably be able to hear what you are talking about because the role play is way worse for everyone else because they can’t hear what you say.

Appeal accepted.

We take metacommunications very seriously due to the nature of the game as it relies on players having limited information. The problem with metacommunications is further amplified since there is no way for us to verify what was said and as such we have to assume that it was used to gain an advantage.

Please keep in mind that future bans for metacommunications will be a lot more permanent.

I also highly advise you look over our rules again. Metacommunications is near the top as one of our zero tolerance rules which you should know.

To enable speedy review of all appeals, appeals that meet certain requirements may bypass the standard, often lengthy, review process. Our banning policy requires appeals which are denied using the speedy review process have this notice placed on them. Any of the following criteria typically make an appeal eligible for the speedy review process:

  • the ban is temporary and the player indicated on the appeal that they are ok with it being processed without a vote,
  • the ban length is less than or equal to 14 days,
  • the appeal is older than 7 days, or
  • the result of the appeal is obvious.

You may make a staff complaint if you believe this appeal was handled improperly, but should be aware that this will typically only result in a review of the processing of the appeal itself, with the appeal being re-opened if an issue is found. An appeal is considered to have been processed improperly if the criteria to use the speedy review process was not met, or if the facts which the processing admin relied on to process the appeal were incorrect. You must concisely describe why you believe the appeal was handled improperly. If no issue is found with the processing of the appeal, the appeal itself will not be re-reviewed. If, in bad faith, you claim that an appeal was handled improperly, the reviewing head admin may decide to extend the time you must wait before you appeal and/or extend your ban duration.
