TaterLord's Admin Application

In-game Username: TaterLord
Discord username: potatoverlord
Characters you play: Sloan Scott, Krill (cyborg)

On average, how many hours do you expect to admin per week: 5 - 20

Days you are available to admin on: Most days I’m active, but it depends on how I’m feeling.

How old are you? 18

Do you have any SS14 experience outside of Wizard’s Den servers, or any SS13 experience? I played a bit of RMC recently, and had a 100 hour sprint on tg manuel but stopped playing since the community was… abrasive at times. I also play a bit of the Axolotl server and absolutely stomped a random on robust pong once.

Do you have prior administration experience (SS13/SS14 experience preferred, please also post a way for us to verify this)? No.

Have you ever been banned from any SS14 or SS13 servers? I believe I might’ve gotten a 2 hour ban in my first few days playing from faxing the copypasta about not announcing when you “self please yourself” to a discord server, but apart from that I believe not.

What are you primarily interested in doing as an admin? I’d like to be able to reprimand bad play while in action as I have tended to observe a bit recently and have seen some things which I cant do anything but a-help. Admemes would also be fun, but I worry about how I’d manage them to make sure everyone has fun - I’d probably limit myself to CentComm receiving parties.

What are you least interested in doing as an admin? Long, bogged down inspections of rounds confirming what exact rules someone has broken and what exact punishments they deserve. But, someone has to do it and if it comes down to it I will do it.

Detail Questions

What role do you think game admins serve on our servers?

Managing the game experience to make sure that no one prevents a fun round from happening because of rule breaks or bugs, and occasionally enhancing the experience by adding things to the round.

Why do you want to become an administrator for SS14?

I want to make sure people have fun rounds and they aren’t screwed up by a variety of things.

How do you feel about the current roleplay status on the servers?

I think salamander’s decline is overplayed a lot and it still offers an enjoyable mrp environment, but from what I’ve seen recently lrp has been getting a lot of people playing mainly for mechanical reasons. I feel there’s no issue with this, except they often massively underprioritise roleplay. Grasshopper has been a lot of fun for many people, especially whitelisted players wanting to interact with newer players, however as the pctide moves on, babyjail comes into effect and the increase of raiders it’s gone downhill. It’s still a nice, high standard however.

Other than banning problematic players, what admin actions do you believe have the biggest positive impact?

Fixing problematic bugs for players manually until they’re fixed in the code and doing small to large events to make rounds more fun. Additionally, using subtle messages to remind players of small mistakes made by newer players such as forgetting the ninja’s jetpack would be good as well.

Have you ever had a negative experience in the game or with a game admin? If so what, if anything, would you do to prevent other players from experiencing this?

I’ve had good interactions with admins, and if I haven’t I forgot them.

Have you ever had a good experience with the game or a game admin? If so, what was it?

Once me and some other ghosts were pestering an admin for trying out the new wizard stuff before I realised that ghostrole plz is super annoying, but they obliged and let us mess around in their admin testing arena with the spellbooks while they minned. I’d like to do these little events in the background to allow people to have a fun round without affecting the main players too much.

Scenario Questions

Scenario 1

It is the start of the round. There are 60 players on the server. The game mode is traitors, traitors have not been selected yet. There are three players who decided to observe the round instead of join it orbiting you. Two of them are encouraging you to “do something funny”.

I wait for traitors to be selected and disable my ghost while inspecting them for tomfoolery to make sure that the ghosts can’t meta their identities, then wait for the round to settle down before sending them to my admin testing arena and do something funny, just for them. If the round seems especially relaxed, I’ll throw some extra stuff their way.

Scenario 2

This scenario takes place on LRP. The Head of Security has decided to coup the Captain. The Head of Personnel agrees with the Head of Security and has taken up arms in case it is necessary to aid in effecting the arrest of the Captain. The Captain is hiding with the Quartermaster in the cargo shuttle to avoid the Clown who has stolen the captains saber as a non-antag. There are five people named in this scenario. Please describe what actions, if any, you would take in relation to each, and why.

Firstly, it seems like a big thing so I’d see if another admin and/or headmin can help out.

If the captain has been an issue in the round, I would let the hos and hop coup them as an IC solution is preferable to just smiting the captain. After the round I’d roleban the captain from command* and do further actions if appropriate. If the clown used the sabre as a tool for making jokes and handed it in to sec when asked, they shouldn’t be punished as the captain was at fault anyway - but if they used it to kill people and didn’t hand it into sec when asked, they should be appropriately punished for RDM and the other things they might’ve done. If the QM was fully aware of the captains behavior and decided to help them they should be warned or punished appropriately depending on how far they went in conspiring with the captain, if they weren’t they shouldn’t be reprimanded at all as that’s the right thing to do with their current info.

If the captain hasn’t been an issue and the hos and hop coup for no reason, then the hos and the hop are at fault and should be rolebanned** and given further punishments depending on severity. Ideally the crew would see this and side with the cap, and they could solve it IC with the QM’s support and have a fun round. The clown should be warned if they didn’t give the sabre back pretty quickly, and given appropriate punishments for any random stuff they did with it.

*Abuse of a position of authority(3-7 day roleban. If the actions are inciting a coup, I’d assume 7d), Taking actions a reasonable person would view as to be to the detriment of the station as security/command(ditto), Unreasonable failure of security/command to follow space law(ditto), so 21d roleban. If especially serious, I’d ask a headmin/admin if indefinite (role)ban is appropriate.

**All the same as *, plus Cults/riots/revolutions so anywhere between 9 - 21dcommand roleban plus a 12h-3d game ban.

P.S. all assuming first offenses and they did no other stuff, which they presumably did.

Scenario 3

You are ahelping a player about an issue. The player has no prior noted issues. A few days earlier, an admin had told you that this type of situation should result in a temporary ban for a first offense, and you are confident that this situation is not substantially different from the type that admin was describing. During the ahelp, another admin pings you on Discord with a link to the ongoing ahelp and tells you to just indefinitely ban them and make them appeal. Excluding trialmins and headmins, all admins are equally “ranked”. A headmin is not currently available.

I personally think more lenient bans are more ideal anyway so I’d give out the temporary ban as the mins are equally ranked. However, if it’s more ambiguous I’d consult the rules document before sentencing them.

Application accepted, please check your discord for instructions on how to proceed. Good luck during your trial period and welcome to the admin team!
