Funky station has implemented a system where the thief has all objectives removed, their goal now. Is to place themself in the history books, the greatest heist of all.
What are your thoughts on this being ported to wizden? Would this benifit thief gameplay? It hurt it.
honestly, considering how much the objectives allow for metagaming, SPECIALLY now that we have no metashield…
With thief being so inconsequential, this seems like a good goal to at least try. Thief could pass to be a bigger threat if their goal is to steal the most valuable stuff, without needing to add another murderbone role.
If its specifically the heist experience that you are looking for, there are some clarification that are needed for me to understand the implications.
For example, do you believe that this freeform objective should act in all ways like the wizard’s “show off” including being exempt from rule 2.9 (do not cause excessive destruction beyond your objective) as it is currently, or like the DAGD objective.
Depending on the yes or no that has a lot of ramifications.
The thief currently has the potential to get some items that could be akin to a heist like : A piece of the TEG (bonus point if its amber or plasma station)
The nuke ( bonus points if its a nukies round)
Medals (very heist like if stored in the vault or cap’s room)
maybe more that I cant think of on the top of my head.
Would more of these kinds of objectives fulfill your idea for the thief/heist experience ?
You could imagine something like:
Steal the (active) singularity/tesla
Steal the AI core/ AI in an intellicard
Steal the cargo shuttle
Additionally, I do have quite the concern over a “show off” style objective, because as it currently stands with the wizard, the “show off” is/was so vague has to lead people to actually break server rules (“friendly wizard” being the top one), wander aimlessly destoying and killing for no other purpose then its own sake, or my favorite, the SSD wizard meta (most effective tactic available, if a wizards SSD’s the moment they are in the game, or just never gets on station, or just hangs out in their ship, they will fufill their objective while doing nothing).
Thief is a roundstart antag, there is no reason to keep it a minor antag. This could make it a bigger threat like the other starter antags are.
Green texting is not necessary, wizard already doesn’t have green texting. Objectives only exist to let antags know what they should be doing. But you could make it “steal X Major contraband items” or “Steal $x worth of items”
It wouldn’t make them fail any more than they currently do when caught.
Just like lone ops can be given objectives as solo antags, so can thieves.
also I do wanna semi-interject. Starlight has (as a rare antag) “Dont you want more?” thieves. that give you every traitor and thief objective in the game and basically 20-30 TC to work with.
Remember, objectives are a suggestion. If you’d rather ignore them and just try and steal as much stuff as you can, thats fine, as long as you’re doing your part to cause trouble. I, personally, like having objectives, because I am Not Good at making creative chaos, and getting pushed in a direction is nice.
Objectives being a suggestion is nice and all, but server rules are made explicitly with antag objectives in mind. If you ignore your objective, and do something like kill/ round remove /mass sabotage / mass murder on your own, you might get in trouble
tell that to the admins. admins will bwoink you for eg: breaking into caps room and stealing their ID when all you gotta do is steal the RD’s Potted plant.
The captains ID is a target for every antag because of the simple fact that it gets you AA which is obscenely powerful.
On the topic of the post, I’m in favor of open ended “try something in this direction” for our usual on station antags. The current set objectives I feel stagnate the round too much, and don’t lead to anything interesting going on for traitors or thieves.
I’d much rather see this as a potential roll for thief objectives, like a less-rare DAGD.
Both feel like “do something big” requests of the player, which is fun, but it would be weird to replace thief objectives entirely - I like the direction they offer.
I feel the current objectives mostly encourage you to play safe/get things at the end of the round, and they often feel like a boring list. Stealing lamps and beer goggles are a free greentext, but it doesn’t make a round interesting in any way. Same with any machine that needs a printable circuit board.
Stealing pets, half the time they are dead before you get to them and rotted, the other half they are just drag this to maints and leave it there.
I think the interesting objectives are things that are in secure areas, or things that will be missed. Stealing the golden toliet is often not too hard, but there is a genuine risk involved. Same with the AME flatpack, cargo shuttle consoles, paramedics suits, fireaxes, teg parts. All of these are genuine things that are valued, useful, and are very variable in how hard they are to get on a shift by shift case. I think if objectives remain, it should be geared more to these things; they are ignorable; they wont cause evac, but it is a genuine issue when they are taken.
Saying that, I always have more fun using the pickpocket ability or doing non-objective heists. Trying to take away all the shoes on the station, taking as many PDAs as you can manage (which is a good current objective imo), swapping peoples internal oxy tanks for nitrous oxide tanks etc. The absolute peak of thief is when you do a grand heist; my favourite thief shift was when I was a salvage thief, and stole the entire armory with fulton beacons, sending it to my stash on a derelect.
I think thief should genuinely change the round, and security should want to deal with them for reasons outside of boredom waiting for a real antag.
